A local man has been charged with drug trafficking, according to Wayne County Sheriff Tim Catron.
On December 26, Deputy Derek Dennis, Deputy Brent Rose and Deputy Jerry Coffey with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office was following up on a drug trafficking tip at a residence on College Street.
After speaking with the homeowners, the deputies were given permission to search the residence. Dennis deployed the K-9 unit and conducted a search of the residence.
The search resulted in approximately 3.3 grams of methamphetamine, digital scales, plastic baggies consistent with drug trafficking and $248 in cash being seized.
The Monticello Elementary School was located within 1,000 feet of the residence which allowed the deputies to charge and arrest Brandon L. Burchett, of Monticello, with trafficking in a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school, trafficking in a controlled substance first degree (greater than or equal to two grams of methamphetamine) and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Burchett was lodged in the Wayne County Detention Center.
The investigation is part of the continuing effort by Catron and his staff to investigate drug activity and to fight the drug epidemic in Wayne County.
Catron requests the public call his office to report any drug activity. You can also send a message on the Facebook page for his office.
