Police are investigating an apparent shot fired on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

According to Russell County Sheriff Larry Bennett, the sheriff’s department was contacted approximately 9:50 p.m. when Sarah Holmes of Decatur Road reported seeing two men in camoflage in her back yard.

After calling from her vehicle, Deputies Nick Bertram and Mark Cromwell responded shortly thereafter. They split up and searched the area over a steep hill in the back yard of the residence.

A few minutes into their search of the wooded area the deputies reported hearing a shot fired. According to Bennett, Deputy Bertram “returned fire” in the direction from which the sound came, firing one shot.

The deputies took safe cover while other agencies responded, including Russell Springs Police Sgt. Melissa Taylor and Kentucky State Police Trooper Martin Wesley with K-9 assistance to search the area.

An item of clothing was found but the search turned up no other evidence or the suspects. The manhunt ended at approximately 2 a.m. Wednesday morning, October 19.

An investigation is ongoing in the incident and as of press time no further leads had been found.
