The food pantry has only been available for a short time, and sadly, there have already been situations of vandalism.

Not only have the doors been torn off, but the food contents have been put in the sewer clean out drain located by the pantry at the Pickett County Library.

Cans of food with bags of beans and pasta were found in the sewer clean out after there was an issue with the toilets not working properly at the library. The drain is approximately 10 feet deep and it was completely filled with food.

The local boy scout group worked hard and are proud of that pantry. It is shame that something supposed to be used to help in our community is instead being used to create destruction.

Apparently, there have been other issues of vandalism at the library including LED lights being broken and the HVAC units being tampered with.

The county installed cameras to help with the matter, but the cameras were broken.

If anyone has any information on the vandalism at the library or notices anything suspicious, please contact the Pickett County Sheriff’s Office at 931-864-3210.

Back in September, the Pickett County Sheriff’s Office posted on its Facebook page regarding scams targeting the elderly. Apparently the scammers are still working and are getting more detailed with their information.

According to Sheriff Dana Dowdy, scammers are calling elderly people and stating that they are a lawyer of a loved one and that they have been arrested and need money to keep them from being locked up. They somehow know specific details about family members and even get older people on the phone as the individual. They also are calling as a loved one who has been in the hospital and needs money to pay medical bills.

Please talk to your family members about this scam. The scammers create panic and throw the victims off guard so they will quickly respond by sending money. There have been people in our community who have sadly lost thousands of dollars, along with their life savings.
