Two more wins added this week

The Clinton County Bulldogs traveled to Campbellsville Monday night to take on the Eagles in what turned out to be a win for the Dawgs, 56-44.

Both teams started out on the slow side with not much offense from both teams in the first quarter.

Midway through the first quarter, Clinton County was down by two points, 7-5, when Blake Melton hit a three pointer to lift the Dawgs up and put the team up by one point, 8-7.

Campbellsville came back and scored again before the quarter ended to lead after one, 9-8.

Melton opened up the second quarter with another three pointer to put the Dawgs on top by two, 11-9. Cohen Davis added to the Dawgs lead with a field goal at the 6:42 mark, 13-9.

Campbellsville added a field goal to cut the lead to two points, 13-11, but a field goal by Chase Stines and another three pointer by Melton put Clinton County up 18-13.

Campbellsville came back and tied the score at 18, then the Dawgs put together a 5-0 run to move ahead 23-18.

By the time the second quarter had ended, Clinton County had put up 17 points to Campbellsville’s 11 for a 25-20 halftime lead.

Clinton County came out after halftime and continued to put points on the board. The Dawgs put together a 10-3 run to move up 35-23.

The Dawgs would finish the third quarter scoring five more points, but Campbellsville put up eight more points to its side of the board for a 40-31 lead in favor of the Dawgs.

The fourth quarter went much the same way for Clinton County as the Dawgs started spreading the floor and running the clock.

Campbellsville tried to stop the bleeding, but wasn’t successful as the Dawgs put up 16 fourth quarter points compared to Campbellsville’s 13.

By the time the final eight minutes of play was up, Clinton County had grabbed its 16th win of the season, 56-44.

The Clinton County Bulldogs finished the regular season district games with a perfect 6-0 record, securing the top spot in the district tournament as the number one seed.

As far as the other seeds are concerned, there are still other games left to be played before those seeds can be determined.

On Tuesday night, Clinton County finalized its number one seeded ranking by defeating Russell County at The Castle.

The Bulldogs started the game off on a slow foot, never having the lead until 50 seconds remaining in the first period, 12-11.

The quarter finished with that score, and Russell County regrouped for the second quarter, quickly adding two points on a field goal in the opening minute, 13-12.

Clinton County then put together a 6-0 run to move ahead 18-13.

Russell County hit a three pointer to cut the lead to three points, but a free throw by Cohen Davis, field goals by both Evan Dearborn and Nick Delk, put Clinton County up by seven, 23-16, with 2:10 on the clock.

Russell County would finish the quarter by hitting only one free throw for a halftime score of 23-17.

Clinton County came out at halftime and quickly gained a double digit lead, 27-17 on baskets by Delk and Chase Stines.

For the reminder of the quarter, both teams were run and gun, moving the ball up and down the floor.

Both teams scored points to offset its opponent and by the time the quarter had ended, Clinton County held on to a nine point lead, 37-28.

Stines opened up the fourth quarter with a field goal in the lane at the 7:03 mark.

Bryson Cross made a layup to put the Dawgs up 41-28.

On the next possession for the Dawgs, Nick Brown was fouled and after the foul was called, a player from Russell County was called for a technical foul.

Brown went to the line, along with Stines to jump up five points on Russell County, 46-28.

From that point on, Clinton County worked the clock and only scored when wide open.

Under two minutes remaining, with Clinton County up 55-40, Stines was fouled on a drive and another player was called for a technical foul. While arguing with the referee, Russell County’s head coach also received a technical foul.

Stines hit five of the six free throws to bring the final score to 60-41 in favor of the Dawgs.

Clinton County will travel to Allen County-Scottsville on Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff and will be back at home on Saturday to host Jackson County at 3:30.
