Dawgs pick up three wins

The Clinton County Bulldogs hit a milestone this season by getting 20 wins for the season with its win over Monroe County Friday night, 59-53.

Clinton County also defeated McCreary County earlier in the week, 54-48 and the Dawgs slipped past South Warren on Monday, 50-44.

The Clinton County Bulldogs hosted South Warren Monday night in a junior varsity/varsity double-header.

Clinton County started the game with a basket by Nick Delk for a quick 2-0 lead.

South Warren then went on top with three baskets in a row for a 6-2 lead.

The Bulldogs then put together a 6-0 run of their own from Chase Stines, Delk and Nick Brown for a two point lead, 8-6.

South Warren scored a field goal to tie the score at eight before Evan Dearborn knocked down a three pointer to end the quarter with a three point lead, 11-8.

Clinton County continued to score in the second quarter as Blake Melton hit a field goal, 13-8.

South Warren answered with a baskets 13-10, but Stines hit a layup to put the Dawgs up by five, 15-10, with 6:59 on the clock.

Almost a 3:30 scoring drought from both teams saw South Warren hit the next basket and cut the lead to two points, 15-13.

Clinton County finished the quarter outscoring the Spartans 8-4 and going into the locker room with a 23-17 lead.

During the third quarter, Clinton County kept calm and continued to keep South Warren just out of arm’s reach.

At the 2:36 mark, a basket by Delk gave Clinton County its largest lead of the game at eight points, 32-24.

At that point, South Warren finished the quarter with a 7-2 run to cut the lead to three points, 34-31.

The Spartans continued its run, making it a 12-2 run and taking a two point lead, 36-34 at the 6:28 mark.

Clinton County’s Brown hit a floater in the lane to tie the score at 36, but one free throw from South Warren put the Spartans up by one, 37-36.

At the 5:14 mark, Caleb Guffey hit a basket to give the Dawgs a one point advantage, 38-37, and from that point on it was all Clinton County.

Stines hit a field goal and two free throws to take a 42-37 lead. South Warren answered with a field goal, but Brown was there to add two points to the board for the Dawgs, 44-39.

South Warren then hit a three pointer to cut the lead to two points, 44-42, and Brown was there again to add to the board, 46-42.

South Warren had two failed attempts on offense as Clinton County made two steals back-to-back.

Bryson Cross made a field goal off one of those steals to put the Dawgs up by six, 48-42 and Brown again made a basket with 10 seconds remaining to move up by eight points, 50-42.

The Spartans drove the lane uncontested as seconds ran off the clock and scored the final two points of the game to bring the score to 50-44 in favor of the Dawgs, and to move its record to 21-6 on the year.

Monroe County 53

The Clinton County Bulldogs traveled to Monroe County Friday night to take on the Falcons.

The Dawgs got off to a great start with a three pointer by Nick Brown to open the game, two foul shots and a putback by Caleb Guffey, and another field goal by Brown to lead, 8-2.

Monroe County scored a field goal to cut the lead to four, but a three pointer by Evan Dearborn and a three point play by Guffey put the Dawgs up by 10 points, 14-4.

The Dawgs would finish the quarter with 19 points and Monroe County put together a late 7-0 run to cut the lead to six, 19-13.

Clinton County quickly got back to a double digit lead in the second quarter after a quick basket, 20-13, and a three pointer by Dearborn, 23-13.

Monroe scored a field goal to cut the lead to eight points, but two free throws from Dearborn put the Dawgs back up by 10 points, 25-15.

Monroe County then put together a 6-0 run to cut the lead to four points, 25-21.

Guffey hit a field goal at the 4:05 mark to extend the lead, but Monroe County answered with a free throw to cut the lead to five points, 27-22.

Dearborn hit another three pointer to put the Dawgs up by eight, 30-22, but Monroe County hit a three of its own to cut the lead back to five.

Dearborn followed up with his third three pointer of the quarter to put the lead back to eight points, but with 1:02 on the clock, Monroe County cut the lead back to five with a three point field goal, 33-28.

Dearborn finished the quarter with two free throws to lead, 35-28.

The third quarter is where Monroe County made its run at the Dawgs, outscoring Clinton County 13-11 in the eight minute period.

Monroe County started the quarter with a 7-2 run to cut the lead to two points, 37-35, but Clinton County scored back-to-back baskets to push the lead back to six, 41-35.

The Falcons cut the lead to three points with a three pointer, but Chase Stines drove the lane for a layup to put the Dawgs on top by five, 43-38.

By the time the quarter had ended, Clinton County maintained the lead by five points, 46-41.

During the fourth quarter, the Falcons just wouldn’t go away quitely as a 6-0 run saw Monroe County take a one point lead at the 5:45 mark.

Fifteen seconds later, Stines hit a field goal and regained the lead, 48-47, and took off from there.

The Dawgs went on an 11-3 run to take a nine point lead, 59-50.

Monroe County hit a three pointer to end the game, but the final buzzer sounded with the Dawgs on top, 59-53.

The Clinton County Bulldogs traveled to McCreary County to take on the Raiders Tuesday night.

Clinton County started out early with a 13-10 first quarter lead. The Dawgs continued to roll in the second quarter and outscored McCreary Central 15-13 for a halftime lead of 28-23.

During the third quarter, Clinton County struggled somewhat from the offensive side of the ball, but held McCreary Central to a low scoring quarter as well.

The Dawgs saw scoring from Bryson Cross, seven points from Brown, and three points from Stines for 12 third quarter points. McCreary only scored 11 during the eight minute period, 40-34.

Both teams tied in scoring during the final quarter with 14 points.

Stines led the way with six points, followed by Delk with four, Brown and Guffey had two each.

By the time the final buzzer had sounded, Clinton County had picked up the six point win, 54-48.

Clinton County will be back in action Thursday night for its final game of the regular season against Barren County with tip off following the Lady Dawgs’ game and Senior Night festivities.

Clinton County will also open up district play Monday night against Metcalfe County at Russell County with a 7:30 p.m. tip off.

Evan Dearborn put up a three pointer during the first half against South Warren on Monday night. Clinton County won the game, 50-44, to move to 21-6 on the year. Dearborn finished the game with eight points.
