Turnovers … by Alan B. Gibson

Odds and ends, and that ain’t much right now. . .

Secretariat wins it again

You almost had to know it was coming.

In Saturday’s virtual running of the Kentucky Derby, a computerized version of the fastest two minutes in sports that was shown on NBC, some 13 past winners of the Triple Crown came out of the starting gate in an attempt to, at least, pacify us fans a little bit.

Before Saturday’s “cartoon” race, I had picked Seattle Slew, the 1977 winner to cross the finish line in front, and for most of the “race” it appeared I had made the right guess.

Then, just as I should have expected, down the stretch and headed to the finish line, Secretariat made his move, sliding past the rest of the field to cross the finish line out in front and claim the Kentucky Derby trophy again, just as he had done for real in 1973.

Honestly, it was good entertainment for about five minutes, but it didn’t really whet my thirst for some real, live sports, and the chance to lose a few dollars for real.

Just Janie and myself on the couch – no Derby party, no hats, no snacks, no pool, no other races before or after.

I do give one shout out, however, to the souvenir 2020 Kentucky Derby collectors glasses with the May 2, 2020 date, that came our way from long-time friend and former Lady Bulldog basketball great Lora Haddix (Wall of Fame, Class of 2000).

Hopefully, we’ll get that chance on September 5, when the horses head into the starting gate for real to run the rescheduled Kentucky Derby.

In the meantime – no sports at all stinks!
