As a 2019 Rogers Scholar participant, I, Abbi Young, a Clinton County High School senior, was given the amazing opportunity to create a project that would benefit the residents of my hometown. I have decided to focus my attention to combat the despondent times in a manner that gives back to our amazing community in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis.
The COVID-19 crisis has shifted our sense of normalcy. With the risks of the virus and the threat that it places, especially on our elderly and at-risk populations, people have been severely restricted in regards to both socialization and communication. This has truly been a difficult and lonely time for anyone, no matter the age. Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” In a time of crisis we must be willing to step outside of our comfort zone and reach out to those around us.
I would like to ask that you join with me in The Seven Days of Service Project which will begin on Sunday, May 31, 2020 and end on June 6, 2020. This project can be completed individually or it can be embraced as a family or small group. To participate, you and your family or group will choose at least one individual whom you would classify as a shut-in. This individual can be a relative, friend, or someone you believe just needs a little lift in their spirits. If you need help selecting an individual please do not hesitate to reach out to me! The next step is to think of seven acts of kindness that you could show your shut-in for each of the seven days in a week. You can choose to be as elaborate as making dinner for your special someone or you could make a phone call or send them a letter in the mail. It can involve money, or can be sentimental. If you choose to participate, more ideas will be available soon!
For this project, I request that you be courteous to others while also respecting the social distancing guidelines and boundaries. Most importantly I challenge you to take this single week to place the needs of another above your own, and spread the love of community to those who need it most. These have been difficult times for everyone, but I have faith in the compassion of our community members and their ability to spread kindness to others as we learn to embrace these challenging times.
I hope each of you will accept this challenge and join me in participating in the Seven Days of Service Project that begins on May 31 and ends on June 6!
To stay involved in updates for the project or any questions and concerns please do not hesitate to call/text me at (606) 688-0027 or email me at abbikate.young@hotmail.com. A Facebook group will be made in the upcoming days for more discussion on the project.
