Throw it up in the air – season begins Monday
When you settle down this week or weekend to celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends, if you’re a high school basketball fan, then you better grab an extra helping of turkey and cranberry sauce, because it might be one of the last meals that don’t include hot dogs or pop corn that you get for awhile.
When Monday night rolls around, local fans will be gathered at the Lindle Castle Gymnasium to watch the Lady Bulldogs get this 2011-2012 season off and running when they play host to the Lady Wildcats of Franklin-Simpson High School (what a way to just straight into the fire, huh?).
On Tuesday, the Bulldogs get their campaign underway with a home game against North Laurel, and from there, things don’t slow down until sometime in late March.
In addition to the “regular” games on the schedule, I count two special events at Rupp Arena, and a total of five different tournaments, all before we get to the post-season play.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining – just giving fans a heads up, it’s going to be a busy stretch.
But hey – there’s nothing wrong with a good bag of popcorn and a high school basketball game. Just go easy on the salt.
Old friend came to visit
I went to the Bulldogs’ scrimmage last week at the local gym and spent a short time talking to an old friend, Allen Feldhaus, Jr., who is of course the head coach for one of the most successful programs in Kentucky, the Madison Central Indians.
Of course Allen was our head coach during the first part of his coaching career when he led the Bulldogs for two seasons from 1986-88.
Allen and family are doing well, and he’s still pretty much on the run. Not only is his Indians a Top 10 team this pre-season, but his daughter, Ashton, is a junior on the Top 25 Madison Central Lady Indians squad, and is ranked as one the top players in the state. Allen said that WKU is among the schools that have already offered Ashton a scholarship.
As for the scrimmage – Allen’s team was impressive, to say the least, but even more impressive for me was the fact that our Dawgs held their own with the Indians up and down the floor.
I’m saying early, Dawg fans, it’s going to be a fun year for the blue and white!
