The Clinton County Bulldogs went 3-0 this past week, including a district game against Metcalfe on Thursday, a game against Danville in the Robbie Davis Memorial Classic on Saturday, and picking up a very nice win against neighboring Pickett County on Sunday.

On an unconventional day to play a basketball game, Clinton County hosted Pickett County on Sunday afternoon in what turned out to be a down to the wire finish.
The Bulldogs started out playing catch up as Pickett County opened up with a 6-1 lead.
Bryson Cross hit a field goal to cut the lead to three, but a basket by Pickett County at the 5:26 mark put the Bobcats up by five, 8-3.
Blake Melton dropped in a jumper in the lane at the 4:55 mark, 8-5, but Pickett County put together an 8-0 run to lead by 11 points, 16-5, with 3:43 on the clock.
Clinton County put together a run of its own with the combination of Cross, Chase Stines and Nick Delk, to get to within five points, 16-11.
Pickett County went to the line at the 1:18 mark and hit one of two for a 17-12 lead, but Stines finished off the quarter with one free throw as the Dawgs trailed by four at the end of the first quarter, 17-13.
Stines cut the lead to two points in the first 15 seconds of the second quarter, 17-15, but a three pointer by Pickett County pushed the Bobcat’s lead to five, 20-15.
Adam Hay answered with a three pointer of his own, followed by a layup by Cross and a basket by Stines for the Dawgs’ first lead of the game, 22-20.
Clinton County continued to add points to the board as Cross hit a field goal at the 3:56 mark, 24-20.
Pickett County cut the lead to two points at the 3:04, but a basket by Delk put the Dawgs up by four with 2:45 remaining in the half, 26-22.
To finish the half for Clinton County, Melton dropped in a field goal for a six point lead, but Pickett County answered with a three pointer to send the Dawgs into the locker room leading by three, 28-25.
At the start of the second half, Clinton County continued to add points to the board as Cross hit a field goal at the 7:01 mark and Delk hit a three pointer at the 5:42 mark, 33-25.
Pickett County hit a three pointer to cut the lead to five, 33-28, but Delk answered again with a three pointer from the top of the key, followed by a basket by Melton for a double digit lead, 38-28.
Pickett County then put five points on the board to cut the lead to five, 38-33.
Cross hit one foul shot at the 1:32 mark to extend the lead to six, but Pickett County finished out the quarter with a three pointer, 39-36.
At the start of the fourth, Nick Brown hit a field goal to put the Dawgs up by five, 41-36.
Pickett County then added a field goal to its side of the scoreboard, but a basket by Delk at the 6:12 mark extended the lead for the Dawgs to five, 43-38.
The Bobcats cut the lead to two points on a three pointer, but four foul shots, two by Stines and two by Cross, put the Dawgs back up by six, 47-41.
At the 2:20 mark, Pickett County added a basket to cut the lead to four points, 47-43, but Delk hit two foul shots and a steal and layup by Cross gave the Dawgs an eight point lead, 51-43.
With 1:13 remaining, Delk hit one of two from the line for a nine point lead, 52-43.
Pickett County then started inching back as a basket at the 1:01 mark cut the lead to seven.
Stines hit two foul shots with 56 seconds remaining to cushion the lead somewhat, 54-45.
Pickett County added a field goal to cut the lead to seven points at the 42 second mark, 54-47.
Cohen Davis went to the line at the 41 second mark and hit one of two for an eight point lead.
Pickett County then hit back-to-back three pointers to cut the lead to two points with 25 seconds remaining, 55-53.
Cross went to the line after getting fouled with 19 seconds remaining and dropped in both for a four point lead, 57-53.
With 12 seconds remaining, Pickett County hit a field goal to cut the lead to two points, but Stines went to the line and hit two of two for a four point lead.
On the last possession, Pickett County hit a three pointer with two seconds remaining and the Dawgs held the ball out of bounds until the buzzer sounded giving the Dawgs the one point victory, 59-58.
Clinton County improves its record to 11-1 on the year.

The Bulldogs hosted Danville in the second game of the 2021 Robbie Davis Memorial Classic on Saturday.
Clinton County came out swinging as Melton hit the first two shots of the game for the Dawgs for a 5-0 lead.
Danville hit two shots from the foul line, but Brown and Stines combined for two baskets for a 9-2 lead.
Danville hit back-to-back baskets to cut the lead to three, 9-6.
At the 2:50 mark, Melton hit another basket for an 11-6 lead, but Danville answered with a field goal to cut the lead back to three, 11-8.
Clinton County finished the quarter with a 6-0 run to reach a 17-8 first quarter lead.
The Dawgs continued to add points to the board in the second quarter as Stines hit a field goal, followed by Hay’s two free throws, 21-8.
Clinton County stayed in control of the game throughout the second quarter and went into the locker room at the half with a nine point lead, 34-25.
In the second half, Danville opened up with a field goal to cut the lead to seven points, 34-27.
Cross answered with a basket, 36-27, but Danville wouldn’t go away, hitting a basket to cut the lead to seven, 36-29.
Clinton County added some distance toward the second half of the quarter and finished the third quarter in full control with a 49-37 lead.
Danville did manage to score two more points than Clinton County in the final quarter, 18-16, but the damage had already been done as Clinton County soared through the final eight minutes to pick up the 65-55 win.

What started out slow for Clinton County gradually got better for the Dawgs during Thursday night’s district game against Metcalfe County.
The Hornets had played the Dawgs to within three points during the All “A” Classic 4th Region finals earlier in the month and after the first quarter score of 10-10, it appeared the Dawgs had its work cut out for it.
During the second quarter, Metcalfe County took the lead on the opening possession, 12-10.
Stines dropped in one of three three pointers to give the Dawgs a one point lead, 13-12.
Metcalfe County answered with a basket, but Stines dropped in his second three pointer following a three pointer by Brown for a 19-14 lead with 5:40 on the clock.
At the five minute mark, Stines continued to rain down the three pointers with his third of the quarter to reach a 22-14 lead.
Delk added points to the board with a field goal for Clinton County’s first double-digit lead, 24-14.
Clinton County finished the quarter on an 11-4 run for a halftime score of 35-18.
The Dawgs continued to roll in the second half as Clinton County reached a 25 point lead at the 2:25 mark on a three pointer by Cross, 48-23.
The Dawgs finished the quarter with a 10-6 run to lead, 58-29.
The fourth quarter was merely a formality for Clinton County as the Dawgs remained in control even though the Hornets outscored Clinton County 28-15 in the fourth period alone.
By the time the eight minutes was up, Clinton County had held on to win by a final score of 73-57.

Clinton County was back in action Tuesday night (too late for press deadline) against Cumberland County and will be on the road Friday to take on Monroe County.
