All ‘A’ Classic State Tournament is saved

Last week I told you how the weather had caused this year’s All ‘A’ Classic State Tournament to crash and burn for 2021.

Then, the coaches of the teams involved got together and made some proposals, and pleas, to the organizing All ‘A’ board, of which our own Michael Reeves is a member, as well as being the tournament manager.

The result was that the coaches and All ‘A’ Classic board were able to come together and do the best thing for the student athletes, by putting together a revised plan that allowed the event to go on.

The new plan sees the opening round and quarter final round being played in sectional format, in locations being hosted by various teams.

From there, the semi-final round and the championship games will be played at McBrayer Arena on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University.

Although the opening round for Clinton County has already been played on Tuesday night of this week – too late for coverage – as of this writing on Tuesday morning, the Bulldogs were to play host to the Owensboro Catholic Aces, the champions of the 3rd Region.

The winner from that opening round game would move on to play Murray.

Congrats to the coaches and All ‘A’ tournament board for being able to come together and pull this year’s tournament off in this alternative fashion.

Congrats to the newest 1000 point club member

For awhile this past Saturday afternoon, it didn’t look like it was going to be Lady Bulldog Braylee Mann’s day.

Going up against the Lady Eagles of Campbellsville in a makeup game, Mann entered the game with 985 career points, needing 15 more to join the elite 1,000 point club.

As the game progressed, it was clear that the Lady Eagles were making every attempt to shut Braylee down from the floor, and for the most part, it was working.

So, she fell back on her free throw shooting skills and with 1:15 showing on the game clock in the 4th quarter, Mann dropped in back to back free throws for her 999th and then 1,000th point.

Braylee finished the game hitting 16 of 19 from the floor and dropping in 19 points for the game.

Congrats Braylee on reaching the milestone, and we’re looking forward to adding several more points to your stats in the remainder of this season.

The schedule, it just keeps on changing

As I continue to note, the schedule continues to change.

This year’s main culprit, the COVID-19 pandemic, along with last week’s winter weather slam, have caused this year’s basketball schedule to be one that has been ever-changing.

In fact, there have been times when District Athletic Director, Brandon Pharis, has sent out emails about added games, and then followed up with cancellations of those added games, even before some of us on the notice list have been able to open the original notice. And in my case, that happens pretty fast because I try to stay on top of my incoming emails.

So, as of Tuesday morning, this is the most recent lineup of games on our schedule – and be forewarned, it can change even between Tuesday’s writing of this column, and Wednesday’s printing of this week’s NEWS.

Best advice – stay tuned, and don’t make any set plans.
