The Clinton County Lady Bulldogs ended its season Wednesday night in the first round of the district tournament against Metcalfe County after having a winning season and finishing 12-8 on the year.
Head Coach Ansley Nelson came off her debut season with a 4-26 record. With no seniors last year, she, along with her assistant coaches, turned the same team into a team with a winning record.
The Lady Dawgs started off Wednesday’s game on the slow side. However, so did the Lady Hornets.
It was exactly halfway through the first quarter before either team would score and Clinton County did it from the foul line as Landree Moons dropped in two, 2-0.
Two minutes later, Metcalfe County joined the board with a field goal, 2-2.
Clinton County’s first field goal of the game came at the 1:30 mark when Moons dropped in a shot from the right side of the floor, 4-2.
One minute later, Metcalfe County tied the score, 4-4.
With seconds winding down, Braylee Mann drove the length of the floor and split two defenders to get a last second shot off that found its way to the bottom of the net for a two point lead at the end of the first quarter, 6-4.
The second quarter saw a little more offensive action from both teams.
Clinton County remained in control throughout the second quarter and quickly jumped out to a 9-4 lead on a three pointer by Abbi Young.
Metcalfe County answered with a field goal, but a basket in the lane by Makenzie Cope put the Lady Dawgs up by five, 11-6.
On the next possession, Metcalfe County cut the lead to three points, but Aysha Sutton scored a basket off a steal to extend the lead to 13-8 with 5:20 on the clock.
Clinton County would only put up three more points in the second quarter as Metcalfe County chipped its way back into the game.
At the 2:20 mark, Metcalfe County gained its first lead of the game, 17-15.
Just before the half ended, Moons cut the lead to one point on one of two from the foul line, 17-16.
The third quarter didn’t go at all as planned for the Lady Dawgs.
Metcalfe County came out at the half and put together an 18-4 run that would last the entire third quarter.
By the sound of the buzzer to end the third, Clinton County found itself down by 15 points, 35-20.
With eight minutes to play, Clinton County never gave up the fight. However, Metcalfe’s lead was just too much too overcome.
The Lady Dawgs did cut the lead to 10 points at the 1:29 mark, but that was as close as the team would get.
By the time the final buzzer sounded, Clinton County’s season had come to an end with the 51-36 loss to the Lady Hornets.
The Lady Dawgs also saw the end for three seniors Wednesday night with Young, Mann and Jayleigh McIntyre playing in their final game as a Lady Dawg.
Individual scoring for the Lady Dawgs was:
