Our own boys of summer deserve accolades

The day after roundball officially came to an end in Kentucky (almost a month later than normal thanks to COVID-19) our own Clinton County High School Bat Dawgs stepped up to the plate, literally, and claimed a championship of their own.

Head Coach Jared Bertram and company rose to the top, coming from behind twice Sunday afternoon to pick up victories in the 4th Region All “A” Classic baseball tournament hosted right here on John Emmitt Field.

Defeating Glasgow first 9-6 after having fallen behind 6-0, Clinton County went on to again take a come from behind lead over Metcalfe County and lay claim to the Regional Championship trophy.

Up next, the Bat Dawgs will compete, for the first time ever, in the All “A” Classic State Baseball Tournament.

At the time of this week’s writing, it still wasn’t known where, when or even who, the Bat Dawgs would be facing in its first round matchup of the State Tournament, other than it would be the 3rd Region Champion, a final that was to be played Tuesday night between Owensboro Catholic and Trinity Whitesville.

The winner of the 3rd Region championship will be hosting the first round matchup against the Bat Dawgs in a first round game set to be played at a date and time that will be determined at a later date, when that 3rd Region champion is eventually determined.

After those first round games are completed, quarter-final, semi-final and championship games will move to Chautauqua Park in Owensboro, Kentucky, on Saturday and Sunday, April 24 and 25.

Back to this week’s 4th Region Championship and next week’s state tournament berth – Congratulations Bat Dawgs, and Good Luck.

March Madness comes to an end in a year

like no other, and hopefully like no other again ever

The Valkyries are the champs.

The KHSAA girls’ Sweet 16 came to an end Saturday evening and in a down to the wire championship thriller that also included some much talked about controversy, the Sacred Heart Valkyries laid claim to the coveted State Championship trophy, picking up the down to the wire 49-47 win.

It was the 5th state title for the 7th Region Champions out of Louisville. The Valkyries finish the year with a 25-7 mark.

It’s always a little sad when high school hoops comes to an end, but in this year’s case – I can’t say that I’m not looking forward to a little break and even more so, am hoping for a considerably more normal 2021-22 season that gets off and running in November, 2022 . . . mask free and with a center court tip-off.
