Clinton County Board of Education held its regular monthly business meeting Monday, April 19, with all board members present.

The board meeting began with a Moment of Inspiration given by school district Migrant Coordinator Wayne Hughes. Hughes is also a former member of the school board, having served from 2000-2009.

After roll call and adopting the board agenda as presented, the monthly Bulldog Boost saw the board recognize Waverly Guffey, who had a perfect score on the recent Word Master Challenge.

Representatives from the Clinton County Adult Education program then made a presentation, based primarily on the GED testing that is now available locally.

The process of taking the tiered tests leading up to the actual GED test was explained, and it was noted the local Adult Education Center was a preparation site for those wishing to take their GED, which is administered by local educator Amy Marcum.

Residents who are seeking to obtain their GED can now take the test for free without leaving home. Previously, the nearest testing site was in Somerset.

GED testing is offered every Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Clinton County Community Education Pearson VUE (an authorized) GED Testing Center located at 2353-B North Hwy. 127–in the basement of the Adult Education/Skills U Office.

It was also noted that the local Adult Education program is for Kentucky residents only, ages 18 and up.

Dr. Tim Parson then gave the monthly superintendent’s report, saying that for two weeks in a row, there were no active COVID cases in the school district.

He also gave a shout out to the Clinton County Bulldogs baseball team for winnings its first ever All “A” 4th Region Championship, touched on plans for ESSER 3 funding and ongoing legislation pertaining to Senate Bill 128.

Following a brief finance report from Courtney Claywell, the board took up action items that were on the agenda.

The board, on motions by Gary Norris, approved the annual Memorandum of Agreement with Somerset Community College to offer dual credit courses, and then voted to approve an agreement for SROs (School Resource Officers).

Dr. Parson noted the school district had recently purchased two used sheriff’s department cruisers at $3,000 each to be used for the SRO program.

On a motion by board member Ronald Albertson, they voted to establish two certified positions of reading and math readiness teachers at Clinton County Middle School.

On a motion by board member Kevin Marcum, the board unanimously approved an amendment to next year’s 2021-22 school year calendar which will make Veterans Day an off day for students and place that missed day at another time period in the calendar.

Finally, on a motion by board member Bobbi Stone, the board approved the monthly consent items including approval of minutes, a leave of absence, approval of subsequent disbursements and claims and bills and an overnight trip for the tennis team.

With no public comments being made, the half-hour meeting was then adjourned.

The school board’s next work session is scheduled for Tuesday, May 11, and its next business meeting for Monday, May 17. Both meetings will begin at 5 p.m. at the old Central Office conference room on N. Business Hwy. 127 and will be open to the public.
