Rollercoaster Yard Sale arrives

The 36th Rollercoaster Yard Sale will roll through at least eight cities and counties in two states, including Albany and Clinton County, this weekend.

The official three-day yard sale will be Thursday, September 30 through Friday and Saturday, October 1 and 2.

The sale stretches from the Mammoth Cave and Cave City area to the north in Kentucky and runs through three areas in Tennessee, ending in Livingston in Overton County.

The Rollercoaster Fair in Kentucky, started by Sarah Ann Bowers, is one of her proudest accomplishments. Bowers wanted to improve the beautiful Cordell Hull Highway and needed to prove that this road was well traveled. Therefore in 1986, she put a fair on the Cordell Hull Highway and in 2001, over 140,000 visitors traveled to the Rollercoaster Fair.

To celebrate its 10 year anniversary, the attendance surpassed that of the Kentucky Derby and today Hwy. 63, a Kentucky scenic byway, is a road well traveled and has been greatly improved, due to Bowers’ persistent efforts.

Bowers was also instrumental in bringing the Rollercoaster Yard Sale into Tennessee in 2002–bringing it down to Tennessee from Hwy. 63.

This year the Rollercoaster Fair route has been extended to go completely around Dale Hollow Lake–north on Hwy. 111 to the Tennessee/Kentucky state line in Static, and then north on Hwy. 127 to Clinton County and Albany, west onto Hwy. 90 through Cumberland County and Burkesville, Metcalfe County and Summer Shade, then back to Glasgow.

The Cordell Hull Parkway is a 57 mile ribbon of road that threads through a most scenic and historical route.

In 1935, the Kentucky and Tennessee legislatures designated the route connecting Mammoth Cave and the Great Smokey Mountain National Park in honor of Cordell Hull as a tribute to his services to the nation.

Hull, a Tennessee native of Pickett County, had a successful law practice near Celina, Gaineboro and Carthage, Tennessee. He was a member of the House of Representatives from 1907-31. He served many years as a U.S. Senator, beginning in 1931.

As Secretary of State under Franklin D. Roosevelt, Hull became known universally as “The Father of The United Nations,” an achievement for which he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945.

The primary sale areas in the Albany/Clinton County area generally include the downtown Albany area, Super City Mart, Mountain View Park, the area near Junction Station and at Stuff Plain & Fancy, the latter two both located on Hwy. 90 West. Most all local vendor areas include restroom accommodations.
