Dawgs pick up wins three and four

The Clinton County Bulldogs continue to add wins to its season by picking up two more this week as the team traveled to Monroe County on Tuesday, 63-50, and Metcalfe County on Friday, 74-41.

Clinton County started off the game against Metcalfe County with a 6-0 run in the first minute of the period by three different players.

Metcalfe County cut the lead to two points with 6:26 on the clock, but a field goal by Colby Langford pushed the lead to four, 8-4.

Clinton County went on a scoring drought, allowing Metcalfe County to cut the lead to one point, 8-7.

Ryan Beard and Keifer Dalton rounded out the scoring for the first quarter to give the Bulldogs a 12-7 lead after one.

During the second quarter the Bulldogs started to pull away and add a cushion to its lead.

Sawyer Stalcup struck first in the period with a field goal for a 14-7 advantage.

Metcalfe County scored to cut the lead to five, but a field goal and a foul shot made by Frank England gave the Bulldogs an eight point lead with 5:08 on the clock, 19-11.

Metcalfe County scored it’s final field goal of the half at the 5:25 mark and other than four free throws, the Hornets wouldn’t score again until the second half.

Clinton County put up 16 more points to close out the first half with a 20 point lead, 35-15.

During the third period, Clinton County came out on a mission, scoring the first 14 points of the period and holding Metcalfe County scoreless for the first four minutes.

Metcalfe County scored two free throws with 4:04 on the clock, but Langford scored a basket to put the Bulldogs up by 31.

The Hornets scored another field goal with 3:32 to cut the lead to 29, but Clinton County put together an 8-1 run to move up by 36 points, 59-23.

Metcalfe County scored on three free throws with 15 seconds remaining, but Stalcup cancelled out those points with a three pointer as the quarter ended, 62-26.

At the end of the third quarter, Clinton County had scored 27 points for the period, which was one more point than Metcalfe County had scored for the entire game up to that point.

As the fourth quarter got underway, Clinton County continued to score, but Metcalfe County scored back-to-back three pointers right out of the gate to cut the lead to 30 points, 62-32.

For the remainder of the game, Clinton County never let the Hornets closer than 30 points, picking up the 33 point win, 74-41.

Every player on Clinton County’s bench saw playing time Friday night and the 74 points came from all but three players on the bench.

On Tuesday, December 6, 2011, Clinton County traveled to Monroe County to take on former 16th District rival, the Falcons.

During the first quarter, Clinton County made the first hit on a basket by Stalcup.

Monroe County answered to tie the score, but Stearns dropped in a field goal for a two point lead.

On the next trip down the floor, Monroe answered tying the score again at four points each.

At the midway point in the first quarter, Clinton County put together a 7-0 run to take a 12-4 lead. Monroe County fought back and scored a field goal, but Langford was there to add three points of his own to lead the game, 15-6.

Monroe County finished scoring in the first quarter with a 5-0 run, 15-11.

During the second quarter, Monroe County cut the lead to two points, 15-13, but Clinton County put together a 14-0 run with 1:49 remaining in the half.

Monroe County would score six points to close out the first half down nine points, 28-19.

As the second half got underway, Clinton County struck first with a basket by Wendell Maupin, 30-19.

Monroe County scored to cut the lead to single digits, but a basket and a foul saw Stalcup score a three point play to move up by 12 points, 33-21.

Clinton County continued to keep Monroe County at arms length for the remainder of the quarter. The Bulldogs struggled on offense in the latter part of the period, but maintained a 10 point lead at the end of three, 40-30.

Monroe County cut the lead to seven at the beginning of the fourth period on a three pointer and continued to give Clinton County some trouble for the remainder of the game.

Monroe County finally got to within six points with 1:30, but Clinton County regained control of the game, scoring the final seven points for a 13 point lead, 63-50.

Clinton County moves to 4-0 on the year and traveled to Cumberland County Tuesday night, too late for press deadline. The Bulldogs will host Russell County on Friday night with tip off scheduled 20 minutes following the Lady Dawgs’ game.
