Two games dropped this week for Lady Dawgs

The Clinton County Lady Bulldogs spent half the week on the local hardwood and the other half on the road to take on Monroe County and Metcalfe County respectively.

Both games for Clinton County didn’t go as hoped as the Lady Dawgs fell to both teams, bring its record to 2-3 on the year.

Metcalfe County won its 16th straight game against the Lady Dawgs, dating back to the 2014-2015 season, which was the last time the Lady Dawgs had picked up a win against the Lady Hornets.

The game started out with Metcalfe County scoring the first points of the game.

Sara Turner knocked down a three pointer to take a one point lead early.

A second three pointer by the Lady Dawgs put Clinton County up by two points after Metcalfe County made a field goal, 6-4.

Metcalfe County tied the score at six from the foul line, but a basket by the Lady Dawgs put Clinton County up by two midway through the quarter, 8-6.

The Lady Hornets regained the lead on a three pointer, but then the Lady Dawgs went on a scoring spree to end the quarter with a 14-9 lead.

Metcalfe County spent the first seven minutes of the second quarter fighting to regain control and put together a 12-4 run to lead by three points, 21-18.

Clinton County’s Ashton Daniels hit a three pointer at the top of the key to tie the score at 21, but Metcalfe County went into the locker room at the half with a one point advantage by hitting one of two from the foul line, 22-21.

The third quarter is where the Lady Dawgs lost the game, as Clinton County went scoreless during the eight minutes of play.

Metcalfe County managed to post 14 points during the third quarter to lead, 36-21.

Clinton County did outscore Metcalfe in the final period, 11-9, but the damage had already been done as Clinton County lost its third game of the season, 45-32.

The Lady Dawgs started Tuesday night’s game at The Castle off on a strong foot as Clinton County jumped out to a quick 6-4 lead on two baskets by Landree Moons and one by Aysha Sutton.

That momentum led the Lady Dawgs to pick up a 13-4 run to end the first quarter with a 15-8 lead.

Daniels knocked down a three pointer to open up the second quarter and give Clinton County a 10 point lead, 18-8. Monroe County stopped the bleeding with a field goal to get to within eight points, but a runner by Cope in the lane put Clinton County back up by 10 points, 20-10.

Midway through the second quarter, Clinton County had put together a 9-4 run for its largest lead of the game at 15 points, 29-14.

From that point, it all started going down hill for the Lady Dawgs, as the Lady Falcons put together a 10-0 run to trail by only five points with 1:59 on the clock, 29-24.

Sutton made a field goal to cushion the lead, but Monroe County answered with a field goal to get back to within five points, 31-26.

Daniels made her second three pointer of the game at the 30 second mark to put Clinton County up 34-26, but Monroe County came back with a field goal of its own to trail by six at the half, 34-28.

In the second half, Clinton County’s hopes of keeping a cushion were torn into quickly as Monroe County came out firing on all cylinders.

The Lady Falcons put together a 16-5 run to take the lead by five points at the 4:34 mark, 44-39.

Back-to-back baskets by Sutton and Moons got the Lady Dawgs to within one point, 44-43, but Monroe County answered with a basket to lead, 46-43.

During the final minutes of the third quarter, Clinton County couldn’t hold strong on defense as Monroe County scored at will.

By the time the quarter was over, Monroe County led by four points, 53-49.

The fourth quarter was a battle for both teams, but Monroe County held control of the game until the 3:42 mark when Sutton made a field goal and Moons made two field goals for a one point lead with 24 seconds on the clock, 64-63.

With seconds ticking away, Monroe County knocked down a three pointer at the top of the circle to take the lead by two points, 66-64.

On Clinton County’s last possession, Daniels put up a three pointer from the right corner that did everything but go in the basket, as the Lady Dawgs fell by two points, 66-64.

Clinton County’s games as of press time have been cancelled for the week due to a COVID-19 exposure. No word yet on when those games will be rescheduled.
