Lady Dawgs grab first win, 46-41

The Clinton County Lady Bulldogs traveled to Cumberland County on Tuesday night of last week, and also hosted Russell County on Friday night at Lindle Castle Gymnasium.

The Lady Dawgs picked up its first win of the season against the Lady Panther by a final score of 46-41, but lost against the Lady Lakers, 57-41.

The ball didn’t bounce the same for the Lady Dawgs Friday night as it did Tuesday night against Cumberland County.

Clinton County hosted Russell County to wrap up the first round of district play, taking on the third of the three opponents in the district.

The Lady Dawgs got off to a slow start, not scoring until the 2:52 mark in the first quarter. By that time, Russell County had scored 12 points to lead 12-0.

Ansley Stalcup scored the first field goal for the Lady Dawgs, but two more baskets by Russell County gave them a 16-2 lead.

Shyanne McWhorter hit two free throws to give the Lady Dawgs four points as the first quarter ended, 16-4.

It took some time for Clinton County to start playing, but by that time, Russell County had built a good lead and the Lady Lakers maintained it.

Clinton County scored 16 points in the quarter, with seven of them coming from the free throw line.

Clinton County trailed at the half, 35-20.

During the third quarter, both teams came out cold as Russell County scored eight points and Clinton County scored seven. The Lady Dawgs trailed by 16 at the end of the third period and couldn’t ever get the offense going in order to gain ground on Russell County.

The final period was a wash as both teams scored 14 points for a 57-41 final.

Most of Clinton County’s fourth quarter points came from the field, hitting six field goals and only two free throws.

As a team, Clinton County shot 40 percent from the floor, 28 percent from the three point line and 64 percent from the foul line.

The Lady Dawgs lost the rebounding battle, 29-28 and committed 26 turnovers for the game.

The Lady Dawgs, 0-6 before heading into Tuesday night’s game, opened the game with a man-to-man defense and it quickly allowed Clinton County to hold the Lady Panthers during the early parts of the first quarter.

Clinton County moved ahead 5-0 on a three pointer by Alex Beard and a field goal by Ansley Stalcup.

Cumberland County scored by getting to the foul line and hitting two shots, but a basket by Breonia Thurman on the following trip down the floor pushed Clinton County’s lead back to five points, 7-2.

During the first half, Clinton County was taking good shots from the floor and it showed by taking a 10 point lead with 1:36 remaining in the period.

On defense, the Lady Dawgs were playing the Lady Panthers tight and not allowing them to get open shots at the basket.

With less than a minute to go, Cumberland County’s shots started to fall and the Lady Panthers quickly cut the lead to five points just before the first quarter ended, 15-10.

The second quarter started off slow and stayed that way. Neither team scored until the 4:20 mark when Cumberland County hit a three pointer to cut the Lady Dawgs’ lead to two points, 15-13, which would be the start of a 6-0 run by the Lady Panthers to take a one point lead, 16-15.

Clinton County then hit a three pointer, followed by a basket by Thurman to regain a four point lead. Cumberland County hit one of two from the free throw line to close out the half. Clinton County headed into the locker room at halftime with a three point lead, 20-17.

During the second half, Thurman drew first blood with a field goal, but Cumberland County continued to fight back scoring a field goal, 22-19.

Stalcup remained strong from the foul line, scoring two more points to regain a five point lead.

Throughout the remainder of the third period, Clinton County extended the lead, then allowed Cumberland County to get back into the game.

With 3:30 on the clock, Clinton County held an eight point lead, but a 6-2 run by the Lady Panthers saw Clinton County’s lead diminish to lead by four points at the end of the third period, 33-29.

Cumberland County would continued to inch its way back into the ball game, eventually tying the score at 34 with 6:55 remaining in the game.

Clinton County quickly readjusted and scored four points that would start an 8-2 run and get the Lady Dawgs back to a double digit lead, 46-36, with 3:49 on the clock.

With time winding down, Cumberland County started shooting long range three pointers in desperation.

Clinton County continued to attack the basket by not being used to being ahead at the end of the game.

Cumberland County made a last minute effort to take the lead, but Clinton County was too strong in the end as the Lady Dawgs picked up its first win of the season, 46-41.
