A 52-year-old Knifley man was killed last Tuesday night, January 3 when the motorized wheelchair he was operating was struck by a pickup truck on KY 76.

Jerry Giles, of Knifley, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Adair County Coroner Todd Akin. Coroner Akin pronounced the victim dead at 6:19 p.m. as a result of multiple blunt force trauma.

According to the police report, the accident occurred at approximately 5:50 p.m., 13 miles north of Columbia on KY 76 in the Knifley community.

Giles was operating his motorized wheelchair on KY 76 just a short distance from his residence when he was struck by a 1997 Chevy pickup being driven by Randy Gabehart, also of Knifley, which was traveling east on KY 76. The report states that Giles was under the influence at the time the accident occurred.

According to Coroner Akin, the impact with the truck knocked the victim over an embankment and into a small creek.

Knifley residents said that it was common place to see Giles traveling along the roadways in the community on his motorized wheelchair.
