The City of Albany, in conjunction with the city street department, will be offering city residents a chance to not only clean up their properties, but also take pride in their town by offering a free of charge “Dumpster Day.”
“The Great Clean-Up” day will be held on Saturday, June 17, from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Water Department Building (old pig barn) on Allen Street.
The clean-up day is for city residents only and totally free for anyone wishing to dispose of trash, garbage or unwanted items using provided dumpsters.
Items that “will not” be accepted include paint, chemicals, tires, or stones, blocks or bricks.
White goods items, such as stoves, refrigerators and washers and dryers, will also be accepted.
Also, you must have a valid ID as proof of city residency.
Albany Mayor Steve Lawson said the free city clean-up day was an idea brought forth by Street Department Supervisor Brooks Ferguson, as a way to give city residents an opportunity to get rid of their unwanted items at no cost to them.
Ferguson said last week, that although he came up with the idea, the street department and all employees worked as a team and were in favor of the clean-up day event.
The mayor and Ferguson also thanked Boils Sanitation for providing the four dumpsters that will be used to collect the items.
Since the clean-up day is sponsored by the city, it will be for residents of the city limits only, and Ferguson said there would be one or two people checking for city identification, with another making sure there are no items put in that are not allowed.
“We are going to try and make the entering and exiting as smooth as possible,” said Ferguson.
Most persons bringing items to the clean-up will be required to unload themselves, but limited help will be available for those who need it, such as the elderly, handicapped, and so forth.
Although this project is a pilot run for the city, Mayor Lawson said he would like to make it not only an annual event, but hopefully, as with the county’s Dumpster Days, see it done twice per year–perhaps once in the spring and another in the fall.
Even though nothing is definite at this time, it is likely another such city Clean-Up day will be held early this fall.
The city and street department employees are encouraging residents in the city to participate in the clean-up, along with taking advantage of the opportunity of ridding their trash and debris at no cost.
Since the city recently passed a nuisance ordinance, Mayor Lawson said he felt this would also be a good opportunity to allow people to clean up their properties without any out-of-pocket expense, and, at the same time, rewarding those residents that reside and pay taxes in the city.
“Albany is a good city,” said Ferguson. “Hopefully we can make our city look a little bit better.”
