A Clinton County native and resident has filed his intent to seek a full term as Commonwealth’s Attorney for the 40th Judicial Circuit, comprised of Clinton, Cumberland and Monroe counties.

Albany resident and current prosecutor for the district, Jesse M. Stockton, Jr. recently filed for a second term with the Secretary of State’s Office in Frankfort as a Republican candidate. As of the end of last week, no one else had filed for the seat.

The deadline to file for the few offices which will be on the May primary ballot is drawing closer, with now less than two full weeks away–Tuesday, January 31 at 4 p.m. local prevailing time.

Locally, only one incumbent had filed for office with the Clinton County Clerk’s office as of last Friday, January 13.

According to posting on the Kentucky Secretary of State’s website this past weekend, only two official U.S. House of Representative candidates were listed. First District Congressman Ed Whitfield, who apparently intends to seek re-election, was not listed as a candidate on the site. However, Whitfield has publicly announced his intent to seek another term.

In state races, 83rd District State Representative Jeff Hoover had also not been listed as filing for re-election. The district (as it currently stands prior to redistricting taking effect) includes Clinton, Adair and Russell counties. No other candidates had filed for either of those two offices as of Monday of this week.

Only a handful of races will be on the primary ballot four months from now in what is termed a “federal” election year,

Clinton voters will help nominate a local Circuit Court Clerk, its U.S. House of Representative in Congress, its State House of Representative and Commonwealth’s Attorney. The House of Representative seats are up each two years, while both the positions of Circuit Clerk and Commonwealth Attorney is for six-year terms.
