Lady Dawgs drop double OT thriller

The Clinton County Lady Bulldogs moved to 1-2 on the week with a huge district win against Monroe County on Tuesday night, but followed up by a district loss to Metcalfe County on Friday night and a loss in a double-overtime thriller on Saturday against Logan County.

Clinton County traveled to Bowling Green to take part in the State Farm 4th Region Challenge last week. The Lady Dawgs faced region rival Logan County.
In the first quarter, Clinton County opened up with  a field goal and two free throws from Landree Moons and one free throw from Tatum Harlan to start the game.
Makayla Smith knocked down one of her game high six three pointers in the first quarter and Moons finished scoring for the Lady Dawgs with three free throws for an 11-9 lead after one.
The second quarter saw Clinton County struggle on offense, only putting up six points during the eight minute period.
Smith nailed her second three pointer and went one of two from the foul line and Bella “Boo Boo” Young made two of two from the line, for a team total of six points.
Logan County managed to best the Lady Dawgs in the second quarter with nine total points and secured a one point lead a the half, 18-17.
After the break, both teams came out and matched each other point for point during the third.
Clinton County managed to post 13 points in the period, as Smith made three three pointers, two free throws by Sadie Ipock and a field goal from Moons.
Logan County also posted 13 points for the period to lead the Lady Dawgs by one point at the end of three, 31-30.
During the final quarter of regulation, Clinton County managed to outscore Logan County by one point, 9-8, in order to tie the score at the final buzzer in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime, 39-39.
Clinton  County saw scoring from seventh grader Crista Thacker with four points, Chloe Longwell with three points on a field goal and a free throw, and Harlan with a single field goal.
In the first overtime, Logan County jumped out early with a field goal for a two point lead, 41-39, but a basket by Moons tied the score at 41 with three minutes to play.
Logan answered with another field goal to regain the lead, but Clinton County was there once again to tie the score, this time from a put back by Ipock, 43-43.
With 1:40 on the clock, Logan County made a basket to take a two point edge.  With time winding down, Longwell went to the line with 50 seconds on the clock, making one of two to cut the lead to one point, 45-44.
As seconds ticked away, Clinton County threw the ball away with 32 seconds on the clock, forcing the Lady Dawgs to have to foul and send Logan County to the line for two shots.
The Lady Dawgs caught a break as Logan County missed both free throws and gave Clinton County a shot to win with one last possession.
Moons was able to get a shot off with nine seconds remaining, but it was off the mark as Logan County grabbed the rebound and was fouled.
The Lady Cougars went to the foul line and made one of two for a two point edge, 46-44.
For the final possession in overtime, Moons was able to knock down her shot in order to tie the score at 46 and send the game in to double-overtime.
It was all Logan County in the opening minutes of the second overtime, as the Lady Cougars put together a 7-0 run for a 52-46 lead with 1:01 on the clock.
Clinton County managed to cut the lead to two points with six seconds remaining on a putback by Harlan, 59-57.
With time ticking down, Clinton County was unable to get a shot off in the final seconds in order to send the game into a third overtime. Logan County hit a free throw with two seconds remaining to reach a final score of 60-57.
Clinton County moved to 1-4 on the year.

Clinton County traveled to Metcalfe County on Friday night for the first of two district games against the Lady Hornets.
Clinton County came out strong in the first quarter with four points each from Harlan and Moons and a field goal by Ipock for a 10-8 lead over the Lady Hornets.
The second quarter was another story as Metcalfe County caught fire on offense and held the Lady Dawgs to only eight points during the period.
At the half, Clinton County trailed 29-18.
It was much of the same in the second half as the Lady Hornets put up 28 points in the period, compared to Clinton County’s 10.
The Lady Dawgs saw scoring from Smith with six points, and two each from Harlan and Moons.
At the end of three, the Lady Dawgs trailed 57-28.
The fourth quarter was won by the Lady Dawgs, but the damage had already been done.
Clinton County put up 14 total points in the period, four from Harlan, one from Ipock, six from Moons, two from Young and one from Lexi Messer.
At the end of regulation it was the Lady Hornets on top by a final score of 66-42.

The Lady Bulldogs hosted the Lady Falcons of Monroe County last Tuesday night at The Castle in a game that came down to the last seconds to determine the winner.
During the first quarter, Clinton County came out hot and heavy, with two baskets by Ipock and a three pointer by Smith for a 7-1 lead.
Monroe County came back and put together an 8-0 run to take a two point lead, 9-7.
The game went back and forth for the remainder of the period and saw both teams tied at 12 at the end of one.
Both teams were evenly matched during the second quarter, but Clinton County managed to get a slight advantage towards the end of the period.
Clinton County grabbed an 7-3 run to put the Lady Dawgs up by four, 19-15, but a three pointer by Monroe County cut the Lady Dawgs’ lead to one, 19-18.
Clinton County managed to hold things together through the end of the second quarter and scored the final five points of the period for a six point halftime lead, 31-25.
Both teams struggled in the third quarter, but it was Monroe County outscoring the Lady Dawgs 5-2, in order to cut the lead to three points, 33-30.
Monroe County’s 5-0 run in the third period spilled over into the final period as the Lady Falcons put up the first five points of the period to take a two point lead, 35-33.
Clinton County answered and the score was back and forth up until 24 seconds remaining in the game with the score tied at 42.
As the clock ticked down, Moons was able to drive the basketball in the lane and hit a jumper with 2.4 seconds on the clock, for a two point lead, 44-42.
Monroe County’s final heave as the clock sounded was unsuccessful, thus allowing the Lady Dawgs to take its first win of the season, 44-42.

Clinton County was back in action this week with a home game against Cumberland County on Tuesday (too late for press deadline) and Russell County on Friday night on the road. Friday night’s game is set for a 6 p.m. tipoff.

Landree Moons drove the lane for a layup against Monroe County last Tuesday night at The Castle. Moons finished the game with 17 points as the Lady Dawgs picked up the win, 44-42.
