Basketball heads toward the holiday stretch
The Bulldogs saw their games last week end on a positive note for the Big Blue, with back to back wins, both against 16th District opponents.
A 61-55 win over Monroe County on Tuesday night at The Castle gave some indication of the “never give up” attitude this year’s Bulldogs have.
The win came after Clinton County had fallen behind by 10 points to the Falcons, and looking for awhile as if the night might end with an “L” for the Dawgs. Then came Clinton County’s 16 point turnaround down the stretch as they secured the all-important 16th District win.
That win was followed by the second 16th District victory on Friday night, with the Dawgs picking up a 58-54 victory over the Hornets of Metcalfe County, at Edmonton. Anytime you can pick up a win in the Hornet’s Nest, you’ve got reason to leave with a little swell chested attitude.
The Lady Dawgs had a rough end of the week after a great start to last week’s lineup of games, but then again, that’s why we play the game rather than just rate the teams and go home.
Clinton County picked up an all-important win last Tuesday, besting 16th District opponent Monroe County in a down to the wire contest, 44-42, at The Castle.
Things went in the other direction for the rest of the week for Clinton County, with two losses coming back to back, beginning with a 66-42 loss to another 16th District opponent, Metcalfe County, in Edmonton, followed by a thrilling double-overtime loss delivered by Logan County in the Bowling Green High School hosted State Farm 4th Region Challenge, 60-57.
While the Saturday game was thrilling, the game environment was excitable in a completely different way, with severe storms that moved into the area, causing BGHS officials to take the precaution of moving everyone from the gymnasium, into a storm-safe area of the school.
The move came just as the two teams had ended regulation play with a deadlocked score, and as the slow moving system made its way across Warren County, the delay lasted for over an hour.
Play resumed, and a second OT period was needed before Logan County finished the contest with the win over the Lady Dawgs, 60-57.
Both the Lady Dawgs and the Bulldogs played host Cumberland County on Tuesday night of this week (too late for this week’s coverage) in a night of basketball that was billed as “throwback night” paying homage to the old Albany High School and Marrowbone High School teams.
On Friday night we wrap up the first round of regular season 16th District play with a trip across Wolf Creek Dam to take on the Lakers of Russell County.
Best of the Lakes lineup set
Lady Dawg Head Coach Tim Moons has sent out the lineup of games for the December 19-21 Best of the Lakes holiday tournament hosted by the Lady Dawgs, and this year’s three days of contests should give fans some great girls’ basketball action.
Marion County, Butler County and Berea will be coming to Albany this year to play in the Best of the Lakes.
Wednesday, December 19 will see Marion County taking on Butler County at 5:00 p.m., followed by the Lady Bulldogs going up against Berea. Wednesday’s action gets underway at 3:00 p.m. with Butler taking on Berea, while Clinton County will play Marion in the second game.
On Thursday, it’s Berea against Marion County at 4:00 p.m. with the Lady Dawgs playing Butler in the nightcap.
Should be a great way for high school basketball fans to wrap up the pre-Christmas portion of the season, right here, in the Castle.
