Ladies grab win over Cumberland County

The Clinton County Lady Bulldogs went 1-1 on the week, picking up a huge district win Tuesday night at The Castle against Cumberland County, and losing to district rival Russell County on Friday. The Lady Dawgs moved to 2-5 on the year.

The Lady Dawgs took a short bus ride across Lake Cumberland Friday night to take on the Lady Lakers of Russell County. Friday night’s game wrapped up the first round regular season district play for the Lady Dawgs.
Clinton County came out in a groove Friday night after trailing 2-0 to start the game.
Makayla Smith drilled a three pointer to take a one point lead, followed by two free throws by Landree Moons, 5-2.
Clinton County scored another field goal, this time by Chloe Longwell, followed by one of two from the line from Sadie Ipock to lead 8-3.
Russell County finished the quarter with two field goals, one of which was a three pointer, and a free throw to tie the score at eight at the end of the first period.
Both teams struggled on offense during the second quarter as the score remained close in the early minutes.
After Moons opened the quarter with a free throw, 9-8, Russell County then put together a 5-0 run to lead 13-9.
Russell County would finish the half on a 7-3 run to lead 20-12 at the break.
The third quarter went much the same way for the Lady Dawgs as the offense just wasn’t there for Clinton County.
During the third quarter, Clinton County only posted nine points to Russell County’s 13.
By the end of the third eight minutes of play, Russell County had grabbed a 12 point lead, 33-21.
Russell County just added to Clinton County’s point deficit in the fourth quarter by putting up 19 points during the eight minutes of play.
The Lady Dawgs managed to post 13 points, but couldn’t overcome Russell County’s offense, falling by a final score of 52-34.

The Clinton County Lady Bulldogs picked up a very impressive win over neighboring district rival Cumberland County on Tuesday of last week at The Castle.
The Lady Dawgs started the game off a little slow, but quickly picked up the pace. With the scored tied at six on a three pointer by Smith, Clinton County then put together a 6-2 run to lead 12-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Clinton County’s run continued into the second quarter and the Lady Dawgs grabbed a 17-8 lead. Clinton County’s scoring continued, reaching a 21-12 lead with 1:58 remaining before the half.
Cumberland County ended the half with a 5-2 run to cut the lead to six at halftime, 23-17.
The Lady Panthers came out of the locker room after halftime and cut the lead to within one point on a field goal and a three pointer, 23-22.
Tatum Harlan extended the lead with one free throw, but Cumberland County managed to score on back-to-back possessions to reach a two point lead and end the 9-1 scoring spree, 26-24.
Clinton County then scored a three pointer by Moons and a field goal by Longwell to regain the lead, 29-26.
Cumberland County finished the quarter with two free throws and a field goal for a tie score of 29 going into the final period.
Ipock started the quarter off for the Lady Dawgs, hitting two field goals for a four point lead, 33-29.
Cumberland County hit one of two from the line to cut the lead to three, but a field goal by Moons pushed the Lady Dawgs’ lead back to five points, 35-30.
Smith hit a floater at the four minute mark, while Cumberland County added one point on a free throw.
Ipock hit a field goal at the 1:42 mark to put the Lady Dawgs up 39-33.
With 51 seconds remaining, Longwell hit two huge free throws to put Clinton County up by eight, 41-33.
Moons also hit two from the line for a 10 point lead, 43-33 with 36 seconds remaining in the game.
Cumberland County did outscore Clinton County in the final half of a minute of the game, but it wasn’t enough to grab the win away from the Lady Dawgs, as Clinton County held on to win, 46-40.

Clinton County will be back in action this week at The Castle to host the Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic.
Clinton County played Berea on Tuesday (too late for press deadline) and will play Marion County on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and will play Butler County on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Chloe Longwell drove the lane for a shot on Tuesday night against Cumberland County. The Lady Dawgs won the game, 46-40, at The Castle. Longwell finished with five points on the night.
