Lady Dawgs fall to Pickett County

Clinton County moved to 5-8 on the year with a lopsided loss Tuesday night at Pickett County.

The Lady Dawgs made the short drive across state lines Tuesday night to take on the Lady Bobcats of Pickett County in its first game of 2024.
The Lady Dawgs kept things close in the opening minutes of the game after Pickett County scored the first basket at the 7:19 mark.
Chloe Longwell drove the lane for a layup to tie the score at two, but Pickett County went up by two on the next possession, 4-2.
Sadie Ipock put up a layup at 6:25, but then the bottom fell out for the Lady Dawgs as Pickett County finished the quarter on a 15-4 run to lead 19-8 at the end of one.
The second quarter didn’t fare well for the Lady Dawgs as Clinton County managed to only put up eight points in the eight minute period.
Pickett County controlled the game and, with its up and down style of play, managed to post 24 second quarter points to lead at the half, 43-16.
During the second half, Pickett County never let up, although the Lady Bobcats didn’t score as often as they did in the first half.
Clinton County only hit one field goal in the third quarter, which saw Moons with three points and Tatum Harlan with two free throws for five points total in the third.
Pickett County put up eight points in the third quarter for a 51-21 lead.
It didn’t take long in the fourth quarter for Pickett County to put the “running clock” into play, reaching a 35 point lead with 7:13 remaining in the game, 57-21.
The Lady Dawgs did manage to outscore the Lady Bobcats in the fourth quarter alone, 18-9, but the damage had already been done as Clinton County took the loss, 63-39.

Invitational
The Clinton County Lady Bulldogs took a post-Christmas holiday south to participate in the Tampa Bay Invitational December 27 – December 30, 2023.
Clinton County finished the tournament with a 1-2 record, picking up a win against Tampa Prep, but falling to Jensen Beach and Nease.

In the first game of the Tampa Bay Invitational, Clinton County took on Nease out of Ponte Vedra, Florida, on December 27, 2023.
The Lady Dawgs finished the game shooting 31.7 percent from the floor, including hitting two of 15 from the three point line. From the foul line, Clinton County shot 66.7 percent on 10 of 15 shooting.
Clinton County pulled down 21 rebounds as a team, with Landree Moons leading the way with nine boards.

Clinton County won its second game of the tournament on December 29, 2023,  against Tampa Prep, 47-42.
The Lady Dawgs found themselves down after the first quarter of play 13-11 and at the half 25-22, but a third quarter surge and defensive push saw Clinton County hold Tampa Prep to only two points in the third quarter while putting up 12.
With the Lady Dawgs up 34-27, Clinton County saw scoring from Moons with seven, Crista Thacker with four and Sadie Ipock with two, for 13 fourth quarter points. Tampa Prep did outscore the Lady Dawgs by putting up 15, but holding Tampa Prep to two points in the third was the key to pulling out the 47-42 victory.

The Lady Dawgs dropped its final game of the Tampa Bay Invitational on December 30, 2023, to Jensen Beach, 47-34.
The Lady Dawgs went back and forth during the first quarter and finished with a one point lead by the end of the first eight minutes of play, 9-8.
A second quarter offensive push by Jensen Beach saw the Lady Dawgs held to only two points, while Jensen Beach posted 16 second quarter points.
Clinton County fell behind at the half, 24-11.
Both teams were even in the third quarter alone at nine points each, and Moons scored the only points in the fourth quarter for the Lady Dawgs with 14.
Jensen Beach also scored 14 in the final quarter, but with the Lady Dawgs only scoring a field goal in the second quarter,  that proved to be enough to hand Clinton County the 47-34 loss.

Clinton County will be back in action on Friday to host Metcalfe County in a girls’/boys’ double header with tip off scheduled for 6 p.m.
