Dawgs escape The Jungle with a win

The Clinton County Bulldogs are now on a six game winning streak heading into this week after defeating Somerset Christian 79-62 and district opponent Cumberland County on Sunday, 56-54, in The Jungle. The Dawgs are now 17-9 on the year.

The Dawgs traveled to Cumberland County Sunday afternoon to make up a previously scheduled game that was postponed due to the winter weather that blanketed south central Kentucky a few weeks ago.
Sunday’s contest started out close with the Panthers putting up four quick points.
The Dawgs played catchup the entire first quarter, trailing by as many as six points on two occasions.
Cohen Davis hit a field goal with 14 seconds remaining in the quarter to tie the game at 14 and start a run for the Dawgs.
Clinton County went on a 7-0 run, which included Davis’ basket in the first quarter, to lead 19-14.
Cumberland County added a field goal at the 5:49 mark, then Clinton County put together another 7-0 run to grab a 10 point lead, 26-16.
Both teams would finish the half with four more points to reach a 30-20 score in favor of the Dawgs.
Clinton County opened up the third quarter with a 6-2 run to lead by 14 points, 36-22.
Cumberland County then put together a run of its own, 12-2, to cut the Dawgs’ lead to four points, 38-34, with four seconds remaining in the period.
As time was ticking away to end the third period, Davis drove the ball up the floor and sent up a shot at the buzzer that found its way through the hoop for three points and to extend the Dawgs’ lead to seven points at the end of three, 41-34.
During the fourth quarter, Clinton County tried desperately to hang on to its lead, but Cumberland County didn’t make that easy for the Dawgs.
Cumberland County scored the first two points of the fourth quarter to cut the lead to five, but a reverse layup and two foul shots by Cannon Young put the Dawgs up by nine, 45-36, with 6:19 remaining in the game.
Cumberland County then put together a 6-0 run, including four points on fast breaks, to get to within three points, 45-42, with 5:46 on the clock.
The Panthers then started chipping away slowly at the Dawgs’ lead and managed to tie the game at 51 with 1:11 remaining.
With 1:02 showing, Nick Poore went to the line, where he was seven of seven for the game, and knocked down two shots to put the Dawgs up by two, 53-51.
Cumberland County then went to the line with just less than a minute remaining and hit one of two to cut the lead to one, 53-52.
As the seconds ticked away, Cohen Davis was sent to the line with 30 seconds on the clock, making two of two for a three point lead, 55-52.
With eight seconds remaining, Cumberland County made a layup to cut the lead to one point, 55-54, but as Clinton County threw the ball in to Young, he dribbled down the floor and was fouled with five seconds remaining.
Young went to the line, missing the first, but hitting the second free throw for a two point lead, 56-54, and the Panthers with a chance to tie or win the game.
In a mad rush up the floor, Burk Sells pulled up from deep as time ran out, but the ball was off the mark, hitting the rim and falling to the floor. The Dawgs narrowly escaped with a victory, 56-54.

The Clinton County Bulldogs traveled to Somerset Christian on Thursday night to take on the 8-15 Cougars.
It was a bad start for the Dawgs as the Cougars got off to a 10-2 lead in the first two minutes of the game.
Later in the quarter, the ball still wasn’t falling for Clinton County as the Dawgs trailed 18-8 with 2:20 on the clock.
By the end of the first quarter, Clinton County had managed to cut the lead to five points, 20-15.
During the second quarter, Clinton County started chipping away at Somerset Christian’s lead.
The Dawgs managed to outscore the Cougars 16-10 to take a one point lead, 31-30.
By the end of the half, Clinton County had held on to a two point advantage, 38-36.
The Dawgs continued to add to its run in the third quarter as Davis hit one of four three pointers in the game, three in the third alone, followed by a basket by Jaxon Mason for a 43-36 lead.
Somerset Christian then put together a run of its own to cut the lead to one, 43-42.
Davis hit his second three pointer of the period to push the Dawgs up by four, but back-to-back baskets by Somerset Christian tied the score at 46 with 4:36 on the clock.
From that point, Clinton County put the hammer down and put together a 12-3 run to finish the quarter with an 11 point lead, 58-49.
The Dawgs continued that run into the fourth quarter to maintain its lead.
The Dawgs put the final nail in the coffin as Clinton County posted a 10-2 run after leading 65-55, to push the score to 75-57 with 1:20 on the clock.
From that point on the Dawgs cruised to the victory as Clinton County picked up its 16th win of the season, 79-62.

Clinton County will be back in action Wednesday to take on Russell County at The Castle to finish up the regular season district competition.
If the Dawgs win against Russell County on Wednesday, Clinton County will be tied with the Lakers for the top spot in the district seedings. If Russell County wins, the Lakers will take the number one seed, putting Clinton County as the number two seed during the district tournament.
