It was a busy July 4 holiday on the water
After what has been a somewhat rainy and miserable spring weather-wise, summer weather arrived in true fashion last week.
With the heat and sunshine came an onslaught of local and tourism traffic on both Lake Cumberland and Dale Hollow Lake.
I spent some time on Dale Hollow over the weekend, and ventured out for a couple of boat rides both on Friday and Saturday.
Seemed like every boat owner who had been waiting for some decent boating weather had the same idea – it was a jungle out there.
Expect the next couple of months of tourism related activities to see much of the same – busy, fast and crowded.
Dead period ends, activity should begin to pick up
As noted in this space a few weeks ago, high school athletes and coaches go through a “dead period” each summer, where official contact between athletes and coaches is forbidden, as is any official use of school facilities by athletes.
This year’s dead period came to an end at midnight Wednesday of this week, so expect things to pick back up as far as our athletes and teams beginning to get out to hone their skills in preparation for the upcoming fall sports seasons.
Golf teams will be out first, with football, soccer, and cross-country not far behind.
The dead period is a necessary break for the athletes, and maybe should be at least a week longer, but it sure makes writing a local sports column somewhat of a stretch.
What is available out there for sports enthusiasts are our two lakes, and now our own golf course 76 Falls Country Club.
Get out an enjoy the summer weather while you can, it’ll be over before you know it!
