Good Neighbors Theatre will have auditions for its upcoming spring production of Aaron Slick From Punkin Crick by Lieut. Beale Cormack on Monday, February 27 and Tuesday, February 28 at 6:00 pm at the Good Neighbors Theatre building on Highway 111 in Byrdstown.
The original version of this play was written by Walter Benjamin Hare and was published in 1919. It was rewritten by Liet. Cormack and republished in 1947. It’s the story of a canny old farmer who outwits the conniving, land-grabbing speculator and who goes on to win the lady he loves.
Written especially for small stages, this play has been a huge hit with community theaters for many years, especially those with rural audiences. It has become probably the grass roots American comedy classic.
In 1952 the play was made into the movie musical by the same name starring Dinah Shore, Alan Young, Robert Merrill, Adele Jergens, Minerva Urecal, Martha Stewart (not to be confused with Martha Stewart, television host and home-decorating mogul), and Veda Ann Borg.
It was made by Paramount Pictures, directed by Claude Binyon and produced by William Perlberg and George Seaton, with cinematography by Charles Lang and costume design by Edith Head.
Except for a few later guest-star spots, Dinah Shore ended her film career with Aaron Slick From Punkin Crick.
This play has parts for three women and three men, one teenage girl and several non-speaking extras.
Anyone interested in being on stage or helping out backstage should attend auditions. For more information call Melva Nunnery at 931-864-3515.
