Monticello basketball has been a part of life for Stewart Gregory for many years.
A former player for the blue and white, Gregory now steps to the helm of the Monticello Trojan basketball program, filling the vacancy left last month by the resignation of Trevis Upchurch.
“Being named coach at Monticello is a great honor and I look forward to the job,” said Gregory. Monticello has a long history of good coaches. Coach Upchurch has left the program in good standing and I want to thank him for having me as an assistant for the last five years.”
Besides his assistant coaching duties for the boys’ program, Gregory is a former head coach for the girls’ team, a position he held for three seasons.
Gregory played basketball at Monticello from 1979 until 1983, as part of the junior varsity and varsity programs.
His first coach at Monticello was the legendary Coach Joe Harper, who he played for during his freshman season. Gregory finished his high school career under Coach Wade Upchurch.
He teaches middle school physical education and also does discipline for the middle school. He is married to Amy and they have two children–Gabriele, who is in the seventh grade and Gage, who is in third grade.
The Trojans ended the 2011-12 campaign with a loss in the opening round of the district tournament. The team loses six seniors to graduation.
“We lost six seniors from this team that were super young men. We will miss them, but we have several kids coming back that got varsity minutes last year, so we look forward to them improving their game,” said Gregory.
The summer will be full of activities for our kids to improve their game,” he said. “As of now, I am working on getting my staff in order and starting individual instruction and strength training.”
