Turnovers … by Alan B. Gibson

Another fun Masters to watch

There’s only a handful of professional sports events I enjoy watching, or even following for that matter. The Super Bowl, the Kentucky Derby, the Indianapolis 500 (when the local weather prevents doing anything else), and the Masters golf tourney.

So, last weekend was the start of my four event pro season, and my second favorite pro event was a good one to watch.

Early in the week, just the thought that an “old guy” like Fred Couples could come off the Senior tour and put together a string of 36 holes to hold a lead and perhaps pull off what Jack Nicholas had done a couple of decades earlier, made it even more fun to watch.

Making it even more fun was the playoff – with a golfer from South Africa, who earlier in the day had made one of the most miraculous shots in Masters history to card a double-eagle 2 on the second hole, and had seemingly been in position to coast to being handed the most coveted golf prize in the United States – the green jacket from Augusta National.

Charging in from the final holes was a young golfer from the USA, to tie the South African and force the playoff hole. Then, when all looked as if it would fall apart, with a hooked shot into the crowd and a resulting approach that didn’t even afford sight of the green, came the second most miraculous shot of the day, a lefty hook that eventually landed 10 feet from the cup, and afforded a two-putt to victory.

In the end, the Augusta National Masters put the green jacket on a boy from Florida, who played college golf at an Alabama Community College and the Univeristy of Georgia, with a first name of “Bubba”.

Masters Champion 2012 – Bubba Watson. That’s the way golf in the south was meant to be.
