For the second time in three years, Campbellsville University student-athletes have swept the Mid-South Conference Champion of Character awards for women’s and men’s tennis.
Melanie Jones, of Albany, and John Harbold, of Hopkinsville, were announced as the recipients of the award last Thursday at the MSC Tournament Banquet and received their awards Tuesday morning on campus.
Jones, a Clinton County High School graduate, is the daughter of Tommy and Debbie Jones, of Albany.
Jones and Harbold’s sweep of the awards follows the path set by CU tennis players Chase Padgett and Maria Gomez in 2010. No women’s award was presented in 2011.
“I’m very pleased that our student-athletes continue to be recognized as athletes with character. These two are very deserving of this award,” said Rusty Hollingsworth, CU athletics director.
Each nomination for the award included a letter of recommendation from the head coach, a list of achievements demonstrating sportsmanship, leadership and scholarship, and a personal essay from the nominee about the five core character values of the NAIA Champions of Character platform: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
Jones, a junior, had a list of achievements which included receiving the CU Champions of Character Award, being a member of the Dean’s List, a member of Sigma Zeta National Science and Mathematics Honor Society and Omicron Delta Kappa, serving as CU Honors Program vice president, serving in honors program and tennis team service projects, volunteering at Stony Point Baptist Church and teaching tennis at Kentucky Women’s Missionary Union missions camps. She is a three-time recipient of the Baptist Leadership Scholarship.
