A three vehicle accident occured Tuesday, May 8, on U.S. 127, just past Potter’s Ace Hardware store, which resulted in serious injuries for one Clinton County native.
Sylvia Ferguson, 54, of Albany, was traveling on George Sloan Road, just past Ace Hardward store, when she pulled onto U.S. Hwy 127 N. She lost control of her moped and crossed the center line hitting a pickup truck head on.
Ferguson was transported to the helipad at Clinton County Hospital and then flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, KY.
The vehicle she hit was driven by Stewart Vitatoe, 21, of Albany. According to Police Sergeant Ricky Marcum, the accident happened so fast that a motorcycle behind Vitatoe was unable to stop, hitting Vitatoe in the rear of his vehicle, pushing it further onto the moped underneath the front bumper.
Jake Asberry, 48, of Albany was driving the Harley Davidson motorcycle and was behind Vitatoe when the accident occured.
Clinton County EMS, along with the Albany Fire Department was on scene to pull Ferguson from under the vehicle and transport her to the helipad.
As of press time, her condition is unknown.
Asberry was transported to Clinton County Hospital with minor injuries and was treated and released. Vitatoe was not injured in the accident.
Marcum said he is seeing more and more mopeds on the roadways, possibly due to high fuel prices.
“Any one operating a moped needs to know the state laws in place,” Marcum said.
Kentucky moped laws state an operator must be 16 years of age, the operator must be licensed as a moped operator and the vehicle must not have a cylinder capacity exceeding fifty cubic centimeters.
Marcum said Ferguson’s moped was manufactured at 49 cubic centimeters and was under the road legal limit for a moped.
Albany Police Officers Ricky Marcum and Brad Cross surveyed the accident Tuesday, May 8, that involved three vehicles, a moped, pickup truck and a motorcycle. Sylvia Ferguson hit the pickup truck head on and was flown to the Univeristy of Kentucky Medical Center. The accident happened on the south side of Albany, on U.S. 127.
