A break in the weather

Believe it or not, we actually finished the full slate of basketball games last week without an issue with the weather. Let’s hope for the same from here on out.

As we entered February on Tuesday, things begin to remind one that this 2011 roundball campaign has more games behind us now than in front of us, so take notice fans that getting out to watch and support these Lady Dawgs and Bulldogs is becoming ever more important.

A few dates to jot down. The regular season comes to an end in just over a couple of weeks, when we play host to Barren County on Thursday, February 17.

The following night all local supporters are expected to be on board for the annual Clinton County Basketball Booster Club’s long- running WANY Radio Auction.

More will follow concerning the auction in the next couple of weeks, but you can mark the calendars now for the 18th, between the hours of 5:00 and 10:00 p.m.

Anyone who would like to donate to the effort and has not been contacted, can do so or learn more details by contacting Lisa Beard at 387-6099.

Coaches against Cancer

Last Saturday night’s special recognition during the Logan County basketball match-ups, for those who have been affected in one way or another by cancer was one of the best organized and well received special events we’ve had at a game.

Congratulations to all who helped organize Saturday night’s program.

Rankings begin to take on some meaning

I usually refrain from paying much attention to rankings until at least after the holiday break, and this year I’ve managed to stay away now until the first of February, but it’s time to take an occasional glance.

On the girls’ side of things, Monday’s Dave Cantrell ratings in the Lexington Herald shows two Region 4 teams in the Top 25, with Bowling Green holding down the No. 4 spot while Franklin-Simpson is hanging on at No. 25 for the top two teams in our region.

On down the list in the region rankings, Russell County is at No. 7, Metcalfe at No. 9, Clinton at 15 and Cumberland at 16 (out of 17 teams in the 4th).

Looking at the boys’ situation, the 4th appears to be somewhat stronger across the board, with three teams in Monday’s Top 25 in the state, beginning with Warren Central at No. 7, Bowling Green at 17 and Glasgow at No. 22.

As far as the region goes, those three teams are followed by South Warren, Russellville and Franklin-Simpson.

An indicator of just how tough the competition is for the top seed in our district – Russell County, Clinton County and Metcalfe County are bunched together at the eighth and ninth and tenth positions, respectively, while the Panthers of Cumberland fill in the last spot in our region, No. 17.

Folks, March Madness gets underway early this year in Kentucky high school basketball, with district tournament action beginning the week of February 21. Get in on the fun now, before it all comes to an end.
