A local man died and another man has been charged with his murder, following a shooting incident that occurred on Sunday, May 27.
Roger Dean, 51, of Monticello, was pronounced dead by Wayne County Coroner Forrest Hicks at approximately 9:21 p.m. on May 27 at a residence on Davis Street. Hicks stated that Dean had apparently been involved in an altercation with another individual and had been shot.
The police department responded to the call at about 8:48 p.m. that evening. Monticello Police Chief Ralph Miniard stated that Dean was found dead from multiple gun shot wounds at the residence.
A short time later, police arrested Jimmy Massengale, 40, and charged him with murder. Massengale was lodged in Wayne County Detention Center. Bond has been set at $500,000 cash. Police said that Dean and Massengale were acquaintances.
Assisting at the scene were Wayne County EMS, Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, Monticello Fire Department and Wayne County Rescue Squad.

Two men have been arrested in connection with counterfeit money. The Monticello Police Department arrested Jerry Joe Yates, 40, and Brian Hutton, 30, after they say the men attempted to pass over $700 in counterfeit money at Wal-Mart.
Yates was charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument in connection with four counterfeit $100 bills, according to police. Officials said that he was additionally charged with a second count of criminal possession of a forged instrument at the Wayne County Detention Center, when another counterfeit bill was found on him.
Yates was also charged with promoting contraband.
Hutton was charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument, after he allegedly tried to pass over $500 in counterfeit bills.
Yates and Hutton were lodged in Wayne County Detention Center.

A local woman has been charged with promoting contraband, according to Wayne County Jailer Ray Upchurch. Ashley Fairchild, 26, of Monticello, was arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department and brought to the Detention Center.
After conducting a search, a female deputy found several pills that were confirmed to be a controlled substance. Fairchild was charged with possession of a controlled substance first and third degree and promoting contraband.
