Democrats to pick magisterial candidates next Tuesday

One half of the candidates who will appear on the ballot in two separate special magisterial races have been chosen and next week, the final two nominees will be selected to run for the offices in November.

The Clinton County Democrat County Committee has scheduled a meeting for next Tuesday, June 19 to vote on and nominate its party’s candidates for magistrate in the 3rd and 5th Districts in the general election this fall.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Clinton County Community Center for the purpose of nominating candidates for the unexpired terms for the fiscal court members in the aforementioned districts.

Only Democrat County Committee members are eligible to vote on the nominees.

The individuals selected will appear on the November ballot under the Democrat device as the only Democrat candidate for said offices.

For more information on the Democrat County Committee meeting, persons may contact Clinton County Democrat Party Chairman David McWhorter at 606-387-6152.

The Republican County Committee selected their nominees at a county committee meeting held on June 4.

The winners of the November election will serve the remaining two years left on the fiscal court positions, or until the 2014 elections.

The vacancies came about earlier this spring with the resignation of 3rd District Magistrate Willard Johnson in April, who resigned to take a bank president’s position. A second vacancy occurred just over a month later in May when 5th District Magistrate Charlotte Bernard stepped down after being chosen as Clinton County Schools’ Superintendent.

Shortly after Johnson’s resignation on April 10, former Democrat Judge/Executive Larry Hatfield was appointed by Governor Steve Beshear to serve as magistrate of the 3rd District until after the general election.

As of press time Tuesday, the governor had yet to name a temporary replacement for Bernard, who turned in her resignation as magistrate in the 5th District on May 14.

(Because the meeting next week will be too late for press deadline details on the Democrat County Committee election will be published in the June 28 issue of the Clinton County News.)
