A residential fire that was reported early on Saturday, July 28 on Jenkins Street was apparently caused by an active meth lab.
The Monticello Fire Department was called to the fire and then contacted the Monticello Police Department just after midnight regarding some items that were discovered in the residence.
Detective Derek Lester with the Monticello Police Department said that the residence was occupied at the time by an individual who was disabled.
The occupant was assisted from the residence by neighbors and he noted that she is not a suspect in the investigation.
The police department discovered an active one-step meth lab and an HCL generator inside the home. Lester said the items were brought to the police department and were dismantled.
No arrests have been made yet, but the investigation is continuing.
