TURNOVERS

Last of the “Big Three” is here
It may be hard to believe, and it seems to roll around quicker every summer, but the last of the “big three” summer tourism holidays is here.
This weekend will mark the final big tourism holiday of the season in and around our two lakes – and expect this Labor Day to be a busy one, both on the lakes as well as, of course, on the area highways.
As I always urge everyone – be aware that things will be more crowded, more rushed, and busier than normal, so give yourself a little extra space and a little extra time.
After this one, the tourists go home for the most part, and we have the next six – sometimes eight weeks to enjoy our lakes and surroundings before colder weather sets in. If we’re lucky, a warm, long fall will give us 10 weeks.
One more time this summer – let’s be careful out there.
Grid iron Dawgs at home – other upcoming games/matches
The CCHS football Dawgs will be bringing their game to the home field again this Friday night, as they continue to look for the first victory of the season.
Playing host to Adair County this Friday night, the Bulldogs will be facing an Indian squad that is coming off of a 49-0 win over Caverna and brings a 1-1 season record to Bulldog Field.
Adair is a 3A class program.
Kickoff is slated for 7:00, expect the gates to open for any tailgating activities at about 5:30.
In other fall sports activities this coming week, the Golf Dawgs and Lady Dawgs have been busy in the past week, but they get a little break during the next week, with the Lady Golf Dawgs playing host to Green County and Cumberland County next Thursday for the only match listed on the schedule.
The Soccer Dawgs will play host to Whitley County on September 4, followed by Glasgow on September 6, with both matches starting at 6:00, while the Lady Soccer Dawgs travel to Warren East on September 6 for a 6:00 start.
The Runnin’ Dawgs Cross Country will have their first outing on Saturday, September 1, when they head to the Twilight Run for the Lake Cumberland 5.
The Volley Dawgs will host Wayne County this Thursday, August 30, then head to neighboring Cumberland County on September 4 for a match, both of which get underway at 5:00 p.m.
Courage in Munich – what an experience that was
I’ve been watching the date since it was first announced in March that plans were being put together for the 40th anniversary reunion of the 1972 Olympic basketball game in which Team U.S.A. was literally robbed in the gold medal game.
I watched that game as a young boy with my Dad – not because it was my choice, but because that’s what I was told we were going to watch that night, and I can still remember the fiasco of those final seconds that were played, and played, and played again, before the Russians were finally allowed to win.
Of course neighboring Wayne County High School had Kenny Davis on that squad, and that made the game even more interesting for Clinton County basketball fans.
The article on this week’s front page gives a rundown of how this past weekend’s seminar went, but I’ll add here that I’ve been to a lot of events in my career, but I don’t think I’ve ever been to an event that left me so much in awe. Just to be in the same room with all 12 of those men, along with the sole surviving member of the coaching staff, and the other sports figures that were on the various panels, was an experience I will never forget.
They may be heros in the eyes of all U.S.A. fans, but when you get the chance to talk to any of those men, one on one, you quickly realize that the “star-struck” attitude that many greats get taken up in, simply didn’t take with these guys – they’re just regular guys who played a little basketball together.
It was something that I’ll never forget.
