A Clinton County artist who for the past several years has been steadily making a name for himself in the art world, has once again taken his work on the road, this time displaying his works in a two-month long art show being held at a Chicago gallery.

Matthew Cummings, a 2001 graduate of Clinton County High School, discovered his love for the glass blowing medium while studying art at Centre College.

He graduated Centre with a Bachelor in Arts in glass and painting, and later earned his Master’s in Fine Arts from Illinois State University.

Since that time, he has spent his adult life furthering his glass blowing education, and taking his works around the globe to shows and galleries, in addition to maintaining a sculpture studio of his own in Louisville, Kentucky.

His latest show began this past weekend, September 7, at the Ken Saunders Gallery in Chicago,, Illinois.

Cummings’ works will be part of a two-part show at the gallery that features his and the works of three other up and coming glass artists in a venue the Saunders Gallery has titled “Original Voices” and is being coupled with the works of a group of other accomplished glass artists who will be included in a group featured as “Master Works from the Studio Glass Movement”.

The show runs for the next six weeks, concluding on October 26.

Cummings is one of the glass artists who will be on hand in the Saunders Gallery during the Original Voices show.

According to his own biography information, Cummings originally had planned on studying painting at Centre College, but soon discovered the potential enjoyment he could have in working with blown glass.

“After taking a required elective class in Glassblowing, Matthew found in this new medium the potential to work with color and light in a way that painting could never match,” notes his bio sketch from his website describing his glass works and Louisville based sculpture studio.

Cummings’ latest gallery show is just one of a long line of showings that has seen him travel across the United States since 2005 with his works being placed in galleries from a host of venues.

In addition to his artistic abilities, Cummings was also an stand-out athlete for Clinton County High School, and in 2007, was inducted onto the C.C.H.S. Basketball Wall of Fame.

Cummings is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Michael Cummings, of Albany.
