Turnovers … by Alan Gibson

Season comes to an end this week

Time sure flies when you’re having fun, but I’ll have to admit, even though this has been one of the worst, most miserable winters I can remember in some time, this 2010-11 basketball season has gone by seemingly in the blink of an eye.

Thursday night will mark the final game of this regular season run, the following night we hold the annual CCHS Basketball Booster Club/WANY Radio Auction.

Then, next week – we head into the second season and the one we were all looking forward to back in November – the post-season tournament run.

Doesn’t seem possible that our Lady Dawgs and Bulldogs have put some 27 games each behind them at this point, and on Thursday, another season goes into the books.

This has been one of those seasons with mixed results, with our Bulldogs and Company having a stellar year in regular season play, while our Lady Dawgs have struggled through a rebuilding and youth laden squad, in addition to having to once again get used to a new plan with the hiring of another new head coach.

Still, on both accounts, I must say it’s been a fun year from where I’ve sat and I’m seriously looking forward to this tournament stretch for both squads.

March Madness gets underway next Monday – even though the calendar says February. Maybe that will translate into an early spring as well.

Senior Night – always a fitting tribute

Haven’t looked back to see how long this tradition has been going on, but for several decades now, Clinton County has ended regular season play with a match up against Barren County, and for as long as I can remember, that match up has been carried out on a Thursday night. Even back when it was an oddity for a high school team to play on a night other than Tuesday and Friday – the Clinton/Barren game was still on a Thursday.

With Thursday night’s final game also will come Senior Night, so come on out and help say good-bye to this group of graduating students and help pay tribute to the parents as well.

Senior night festivities will take place in between the girls’ and boys’ contests.

Radio Auction – tune in and get in on the fun

The annual Booster Club /WANY Radio Auction is set to be held this Friday night, again headquartered at the C.C.H.S. Cafeteria and broadcast over the airwaves of local radio station WANY. You can enjoy the program either by tuning in to WANY FM at 106.3, or by listening to the simulcast on MediaCom’s channel 16. Or, of course, you can come out to the cafeteria and get in on the fun with the “in-house” crowd as we refer to that group.

The antics that go on can be quite entertaining, to say the least.

Bottom line is, whichever way you choose to get involved – get involved and help support our varsity basketball programs.

The Auction is set to begin at 5:00 p.m., and will continue until 10:00 p.m.

A first – at least as far as I can remember

I’ve sat through a lot of games in the past three-plus decades, and seen a lot of strange things happen. Last Tuesday night when the Dawgs were playing South Laurel, two players left the floor after being assessed with personal fouls – at the same time, without being ejected.

Clinton County’s Wendell Maupin was jockeying under the goal with Cardinal Spencer Brashear with 4:45 showing on the game clock, when they were assessed with a personal foul in a “double-foul” situation. Turned out it was the fifth personal foul for both players, sending both to the bench having fouled out. Just can’t remember ever having seen that before.
