A Burkesville man was assaulted Wednesday afternoon, October 31, while working on his farm on Leslie Road.

According to Cumberland County Sheriff Stevie Wheat, Hyland Norris, 84, was at his barn lot when two females approached him wanting a ride to town. Norris told them no. The two females, Danielle Marion, 20, and Barbara Parrish, 23, both of Burkesville, left and then returned when Norris was in the barn. The two hit Norris on the head with a rock and a hammer, leaving him with five lacerations. The two then fled the scene. Norris followed, attempting to chase them and then went to a neighbor’s house where the police and an ambulance were called. A neighbor found the suspects and held them until police arrived.

Norris was transported to Cumberland County Hospital where he was treated and released.

Marion and Parrish were arrested and charged with second degree assault and first degree burglary. Both were taken to Adair County Jail and held on a $1 million bond.

Assisting Wheat at the scene were Assistant Chief of Police Lawrence Nettles, Sheriff’s Deputy Kenneth Johnson and Emergency Management Director Greg Cary.
