The Clinton County Lady Bulldogs lost the final two games of the regular season last week, to move to an overall record of 4-24.

Even though the Lady Dawgs have struggled this past season, Clinton County hasn’t given up. It is clear to see the Lady Bulldogs have learned a great deal out on the hardwood. Although the record may not reflect it, Clinton County has improved considerably since opening the season at Franklin-Simpson on November 29, 2010.

Last week, the regular season came to an end, but Clinton County was still alive in the 16th District Tournament.

This year, Clinton County, both boys and girls, will play Metcalfe County at Edmonton. A rather tough place to play as a visiting team, Clinton County faced all odds Tuesday night as the team picked up the number three seed in the district.

That game will appear in next week’s edition of the Clinton County News.

Barren County 60

The Clinton County Lady Bulldogs came out on Thursday night, Senior Night, and held its own against the 4th Region rival Barren County.

The Lady Dawgs surprised all the fans by staying with the Trojanettes throughout the first quarter and more than halfway through the second quarter.

The first points of the game came from freshman Alex Beard as she hit one of two from the line. Barren County answered with a field goal, but Stevi Morgan hit back-to-back baskets to take a 5-2 lead.

Barren County continued to look frazzled during the first quarter and found the Lady Dawgs down by only one point after the first quarter, 12-11.

During the second quarter, the Lady Dawgs took the lead on two free throws by Morgan, 13-12. Barren County then started making shots and holding the Lady Dawgs on defense.

With 3:07 on the clock, Barren County reached a 10 point lead and continued to score, reaching a 15 point lead before the Lady Dawgs would score again.

Clinton County finished the quarter only scoring five points compared to Barren County’s 26.

With the Trojanettes up by 21 points, 37-16, Clinton County came back out in the second half and continued to work hard.

The team’s efforts were commendable, but it wasn’t enough to climb out of the hole Barren County had dug in the second quarter.

Clinton County finished the third quarter scoring 11 points and finished the fourth quarter with 11 points for a total of 38 points for the game.

Barren County reached the 60 mark during the final minute of the game for a final of 60-38.

Individual scoring for Clinton County was:

Morgan 17

Thurman 10

Beard 4

Clinton County 51

Southwestern 83

The Clinton County Bulldogs opened up last week with a game against Pulaski Southwestern.

The Lady Dawgs had to finish out the regular season without Head Coach Carter Adams, as he was ejected from the game at Monticello on Monday night. The punishment for being ejected from a game is a two-game suspension from the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.

Adams was back for Tuesday’s opening round of the district tournament.

Clinton County led in the early minutes of the game after Southwestern drew first blood with a two point basket.

Alex Beard knocked down a three pointer for a one point advantage, 3-2, but Southwestern hit a three pointer of its own to take a 5-3 lead in the first minute of the game.

Southwestern then added two more baskets to the scoreboard for a 10-3 lead, but Breonia Thurman hit a basket at the foul line to cut the lead to five, 10-5.

Southwestern continued to control the game for the remainder of the first quarter, allowing Clinton County only 14 points, to the Lady Warrior’s 22.

During the second quarter, Clinton County cut the lead to six points, 22-16, on a basket by Thurman, but Southwestern made a 7-0 run to move ahead by 13 points.

Vanessa Lowhorn nailed a three pointer for two of her 10 points, but Southwestern made a field goal to move ahead, 31-19, with 4:30 on the clock.

Clinton County struggled for the remaining part of the half, but found itself down by 11 at the break, 40-29.

The big story of Tuesday night’s game was more or less focused on Stevi Morgan. Going into Tuesday night’s game, Morgan needed only 13 points to move into the 1,000 point club.

Morgan scored 12 points in the first half and reached her 1,000 point with 6:45 on the clock in the third quarter on a 12 foot jumper.

After Morgan hit that shot, Clinton County fell into a shooting slump. The Lady Bulldogs hit only one shot, a three pointer from Thurman at the 6:01 mark, compared to Southwestern’s 16 points added to the scoreboard.

With 2:56 remaining in the third quarter, Morgan hit another basket to cut the lead to 24 points, 60-36.

Clinton County finished the quarter down by 22 points, 64-42.

The Lady Bulldogs finished the game much like the previous three quarters, out matched and struggling from the floor.

Southwestern scored 19 points in the fourth quarter compared to Clinton County’s nine, for an 83-51 victory.

Individual scoring for Clinton County was:

Morgan 21

Thurman 12

Lowhorn 10
