The formal process of merging Monticello students into the Wayne County School District began last Friday, March 22, when Wayne County Superintendent John Dalton and Monticello School State Manager James Hamm met with Kentucky Department of Education officials in Frankfort.

According to Dalton, the formal discussion began regarding the process of creating a merged school district beginning with the 2013-2014 school year. Monticello Independent School will cease operation on June 30, 2013.

Dalton said that he and Hamm will be meeting frequently and designating staff to formally begin working out details for the next school year.

“We are committed to work together over the coming weeks and months to create a successful transition for all students and a safe and rigorous learning environment for the next school year,” stated Dalton.

Dalton updated staff members at Wayne County on the process through an e-mail last Friday evening. He pledged that information would be shared through e-mails and press releases as significant events occur in this merger process.

The first step will be determining grade structure, according to Dalton. Officials have the numbers of students that will be in each grade next year. No specific decisions have been made regarding buildings that will be used, but Dalton said that he had been advised by state officials to use all existing space that is available.

Dalton could provide no specific information about one of the big questions related to this merger, which is in regard to personnel. He said that no decisions regarding staffing can be made until the grade structure is determined.

He also stated that the state is currently working on getting Wayne County updated SEEK funding formulas for next year, that will include students in both local school districts.
