To the Editor,

National Nursing Home Week begins on Mother’s Day (May 12) and ends on May 18, 2013. This observance is an opportunity to involve families, community members, and youth in community-wide show of support and respect for the individuals who reside in skilled nursing home facilities and the staff who provide care and support services. This year’s theme, “Team Care-Everyone Pitches In,” encourages facility and family involvement and also volunteerism by individuals and local organizations. As part of my community service platform for the Miss Kentucky Outstanding Teen organization, I make regular visits to nursing homes in Southeast Kentucky, where I give time and attention to the residents. So, during National Nursing Home Week, I encourage you to make a visit to loved ones, friends, and neighbors residing in local nursing homes. If you can’t visit, then make a phone call, send a greeting card, or provide some act of kindness. I have learned from my visits that this special attention will “make somebody’s day.” Make your plans now to “pitch in.”
