A Wayne County man died early Thursday, February 24, following a shooting involving two deputies with the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department.

James M. Lane, 38, who resided in the Jabez Community on the other side of Lake Cumberland, was apparently shot after the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department was called to his residence at 4:07 a.m. Thursday. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Wayne County Coroner Forrest Hicks.

According to a press release issued by Kentucky State Police, the original call came into the Wayne County 911 Center as a domestic dispute. The local 911 Center then contacted Pulaski County to request assistance, since the call came from a residence on that side of Lake Cumberland.

A story in The Commonwealth-Journal noted that Lane’s wife, Patti Lane, had called 911 when her husband, who had been drinking, became out of control at their home. The incident began around 4 a.m. Thursday. She said she was at home with her husband and her brother and sister-in-law when her husband became angry.

“My husband had been drinking, and was in a rage,” Mrs. Lane told The Commonwealth-Journal Thursday morning, a few hours after the shooting. Mrs. Lane and her relatives, along with one juvenile relative, barricaded themselves in a room, hoping Mr. Lane would calm down.

Pulaski County Sheriff Todd Wood said that two deputies were dispatched to the residence.

Wood said a series of 911 calls made from the home, located at 25 Portland Drive, indicated that Mr. Lane’s fit of rage gradually escalated as deputies made the long trek from Pulaski County to the remote area in Wayne County.

“The first call indicated a domestic disturbance,” Wood said. Later, family members told dispatchers Mr. Lane was pounding on the door to the room in which they were hiding.

“The final call indicated that he had a gun,” Wood said.

“As the deputies approached the residence, they could hear screams and cries for help.”

Wood said the deputies, sensing that some of the occupants of the home were in immediate danger, forced their way into the home and found Lane inside holding a firearm.

“He was given multiple commands loud and clear to drop his weapon,” Wood said. “He raised and pointed the gun at (Deputy Danny Pevley)–forcing him to use deadly force.”

According to Wood, Pevley shot Lane in the torso when Lane refused to drop the gun he was holding–and then pointed the gun directly at Pevley.

Kentucky State Police were called into the investigation at about 5:55 a.m. Detective Doug Boyd is the lead investigator and was also assisted at the scene by officers from the Kentucky State Police, Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department, Pulaski County EMS, Wayne County Coroner’s Office and Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
