Wayne County Fiscal Court will donate up to $5,000 in additional funding to the Wayne County Rescue Squad to help them meet expenses for the remainder of the current fiscal year.

Magistrates approved the funding during a meeting on Thursday, May 9. Wayne County Rescue Squad Captain David Frost discussed the need for additional money with magistrates during the session, noting that a large portion of their annual budget is used to pay insurance for buildings and vehicles.

Frost told the court that one of the most immediate needs for the squad is new tires for several of the vehicles. Besides insurance, vehicle maintenance is another one of the larger expenses incurred by the volunteer squad.

He said that $5,000 would help the squad pay the remainder of the insurance premium and it would allow them to purchase several sets of new tires.

The county donates $20,000 annually to the Rescue Squad to help with operational expenses.

Magistrates discussed some options with Frost that may save the squad some money in the future, such as using the county’s mechanic for repair work. They also noted that the squad should be able to purchase tires at the state contract price that the county receives.
