(From the office of Glen Murphy, Superintendent of Schools)

On Thursday, May 9, there was a heating and cooling unit that went bad at the Cumberland County Elementary School.

The unit was in a classroom and it popped (not exploded) and smoke began to roll from the unit.

The teacher removed her students and notified the principal who pulled the fire alarm and all students evacuated the building within three minutes.

Once the alarm was pulled the fire department and EMS were notified and showed up on the scene in a very short time.

After assessing the situation and confirming that no danger existed, students came back in the building and classes resumed.

We would like to commend the teachers, staff, students and all emergency management team members for an outstanding job and making sure all students were safe.
