Golf teams getting ready

The Lady Golf Dawgs and Golf Dawgs, as I mentioned last week, will be the next local team up as far as getting things rolling on the 2013 fall sports season for Clinton County High School athletic teams, with practice starting officially July 15 in preps for a season that sometimes gets underway before school actually starts.

Along those same thoughts, Lady Golf Dawgs Coach Lynn Starnes sent information this week about plans for the upcoming fundraising tournament that is to be held June 22 at 76 Falls Country Club.

Staying with the long-time “Fore The Kids” theme (yes, I coined that phrase back in the late 1990s), this year’s benefit tournament will also be held in memory of Mike Anders, the CCHS Golf Dawgs coach who was tragically killed last winter in an airplane crash in Florida.

The “Mike Anders Memorial” Golf Tournament will be open to the first 88 entrants who have paid the $50 entry fee.

The first place team will share the top prize of $2,000 (based on a minimum field of 72 players), with Calcutta prizes for second and third place finishes.

A host of side contests will be featured including long drives, putting and closest to the pin, all of which will include prizes for the winners.

Those of us who knew Mike were familiar with his constant grin, jovial mood and his passion for his students and student athletes.

Naming the tournament in his honor is an extremely fitting gesture, and kudos certainly go to whomever was responsible for this idea.
